http://www.chicitysports.com/2014/01/02/10-in-10-top-10-chicago-news-sports-anchors-of-all-time/

10 in 10, a segment where we count down a top 10 in 10 days. It may not look all that great, but this might have been the most researched and hardest set of articles I have done for CCS. The reason being, is the information is simply not as readily available for the very specific sportscasting field of news show sports anchoring.

Thanks for everyone here that gave me feedback when doing research, and thanks to all of the dozens of oldtimers offline that racked their memory for the cause of recognizing a few. Not a single person gave me one response. Everyone gave me an initial response, then a secondary response after they thought it through. Interesting type of consistent feedback. :)

A News Sports Anchor is the person you usually see near the end of the news program giving out the sports highlights and scores for the day. Only Chicago television news programs are considered. The programs can be found on WBBM 2, WMAQ 5, WLS 7, WGN 9(including CLTV), WFLD 32 as the morning, afternoon, daytime, evening, nightly, or various weekend news.

The entire top 10 is completely finalized. So guess away, and take that trip down memory lane.

Johnny Morris was my favorite Chicago sports broadcaster. He was a WR for the Bears in the 60s and leading all time receiver for many years. Then he moved to channel 2 where he did sports for many years. He was also the broadcaster for the Bears for many years before the network forced out all the local broadcasters to bring in national teams

Nobody had more fun than this guy. He said whatever he thought on the broadcasts regardless of if it were critical against the Bears. He was always laughing and having a great time. The guy was a total original not like all the plastic people on TV these days

He was also the only guy that Ditka allowed to give him shit. Ditka was a naked nerve in the 80s and ready to explode at any moment, but Morris had a Bears pregame show with Ditka and often made critical remarks. Ditka took it from Morris but no one else

I tell you what, I was on the road the last 2 sundays all day. I listed to football for like 8 hours each time, streaming from my phone and got to hear the local broadcasts as I bounced around. And Joniac and Thayer were the best I heard. Joniac was good at calling shit so you actually knew what was going on. So many of the other guys would just give commentary so half the time you didnt even know where they were on the field. But Joniac did true play by play. And Thayer was every good about pointing out who was doing well or getting beat every play. I thought it was good.

Yeah, I think the older locals appreciate this more than the millennials who grew up with a much bigger influence from ESPN. And of course, if your a Chicago sports fan, but not a local, this is a whoosh deal.

It's got to be Brad Palmer #3, Tim Weigel #2, and Jim Rose #1

I have a feeling Weigel will make this list, liked him but his sports knowledge was marginal at best.

He was the original entertainer

I wasn't trying to troll you guys.... I was making fun of Joe Buck, cause he is awful, yet gets the biggest gigs, and I would bet there are plenty of small local broadcasters that could run circles around him :D

Some of you will love the pick for #1, some will not like it. Just be aware, that I did in fact consult dozens upon dozens of long time Chicago sports fans and local news watchers. Some of the ranks, I don't personally agree with myself, but I had to put away my own bias as much as possible). One problem that I ran into, was finding a huge base of people that still rely on the Trib and times for all current events. The newspaper base from the television generation is still very big. A columnist list like this one, would be an even larger project.
