Had a particularly raucous night that ended with you doing the walk of shame the next morning? Uh oh, hope you don’t get HTML. Just kidding! HTML is a programming language that’s used to make websites, but according to a new study from VoucherCloudand published by the L.A. Times, 1 in every 9 Americans–or exactly 11%–think HTML is actually a sexually transmitted disease. VoucherCloud surveyed 2,392 people ages 18 or older and, according to the L.A. Times, “were given both tech and non-tech terms and were asked to choose from three possible definitions.”

The results? An embarrassing amount of Americans think HTML is a disease you can catch from another human being–which says a lot about the state of both sex and computer education in the U.S. Other findings, unearthed by the Times:
  • 23% thought an “MP3” was a “Star Wars” robot. It is actually an audio file.
  • 18% identified “Blu-ray” as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.
  • 15% said they believed “software” is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.
  • 12% said “USB” is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector.
It’s like they ONLY interviewed my grandma and her friends!

People troll that shit. Everyone knows what the **** a USB or an MP3 is. But if they gave me some dumb choice, I'd pick the dumb choice.

It didn't look like a clock.

LOL, have you ever seen a clock in a suitcase?

Ok. If you have, have you ever seen a suitcase bomb IRL? I submit to the jury your honor that the public is making general deductions about a device because they saw it in a movie or TV show.

The defense rests your honor.

No man, they really don't.

I went to have my oil changed by a friend of the family recently.... and the guy who is in his 50s and his assistant girl who is in her late 20s or early 30s were asking me about Wifi and how you get it... they thought it was an internet service you have to pay extra for. Then I explained wireless routers and how they work.

It is not as bad at the example in the OP I realize that, but if 2 people at that age, both competent people, could be confused about how Wifi works.... I am not shocked people don't know HTML is a programming language for websites.

Only 11%? I'm surprised it isn't higher.

This^. I mean, when you realize the amount of people who can't name the VP, think that DC is in Washington state, and display other such baffling ignorance this number seems incredibly low.

I was going to ask the same questions. I bet 80% of those that believe HTML is an STD are like 60+ in age

Knowing what HTML is has zero importance to most people's lives.

Actually you are incorrect sir as everyone outside of a third world country browses the web. It just goes to show that people like to use a product but have no care in the world for how or why it works, or what it is.

Hence the typical response nowadays "Meh".

I knew it was something computer related but still don't know what it is in and of itself.
I consider articles like this joke articles. There's no way to prove it.
All you have to do is hear someone talk or read an article and you know it's computer related

I don't know how to build a road, or what goes in asphalt, yet here I am, cruising down roads all the time. Knowing what HTML is has no real material impact if you're a simple user of the internet. What point of knowledge is acceptable? Should they know what SMTP is? DNS? JS? Should they know the difference between IPv4 and 6?

Knowing what is or isn't an STD could be though.

True.

True.

No, but they should probably know that an MP3 isn't a star wars robot...
