Sometimes, when you don't have money, you focus on the good things in life and are grateful for just being alive and healthy. Or, it's the first time those poor bastards ever saw a camera.

Looked through a few more pictures and all the kids seem happy. Shows how they can find fun and be happy even in bad circumstances.

because money wasnt the end all be all yet. People still bartered and there was less red tape. But government started to take over more than ever.

people had less things to do and had to rely on each other

Just a bit of glorification going on in here. The great depression was in no way a happy go lucky time because people were freed from the attachments of money.

And how many of their families were interred? Even good presidents do some fantastically fucked up shit.

Good point. I know my grandmother (RIP) didn't have to many happy stories.

That was indeed some fucked up shit.

My great grandpa was a doctor and my grandpa (who was a kid then) told stories about how he didn't have a practice or anything and wound up working out of his house, sometimes for food but mostly for free. The stories were pretty horrifying.

My grandmother was young too. She said people riding the trains , Hobos she called them would come by their small farm and ask to work for food. She said they were nice and one time a guy told her there was a secret mark on their fence that meant it was an honest house. You could work for a meal. She told me she searched everywhere for that mark but never found it. Her mother would never turn anyone away unless they simply had nothing extra left, but they only got that low close to harvest. She was very generous her entire life. Her childhood might have been the reason. That was in Iowa by the way.

My great grandmother lived to be 98. I remember her telling me how during prohibition, her and her husband would make their own moonshine in their basement out of a bathtub. And yes, she was as badass as she sounds...

I couldn't imagine being born around 1900. Say you were born in 1900, and lived to be 85... You've experienced the wright brothers, model T, world war one, the great depression, world war two, civil rights, Cuban Missile Crisis (Cold War), Vietnam, the moon landing... I'm sure I'm missing some major stuff, but good God, they were truly the greatest generation.

Many of these people lost everything too. There were no reparations for the stuff lost. There should have been.

Of all the things we as a nation have done over the centuries this ranks right up there with the most despicable.
