Big changes for MLS Cup Playoffs format in 2012 | MLSsoccer.com

MLS Cup will no longer be neutral-site but at the home field of the higher seeded club.

The qualification was also changed, with wild cards eliminated. Now the top 5 seeds in each conference make the playoffs, and the cross-over rule has also been eliminated.

New Series Formats:
4 vs. 5 (not sure what it is called, just calling it a play-in): single game
Conference Semifinals: two-game aggregate
Conference Finals: two-game aggregate (was single game before)
MLS Cup: single game

Ya, just got lucky, lol.

wow why are they changing it up?

Because of the schedule changes created by the Montreal expansion, and because the format sucked. There's another thread about it, or you can read my article that covers all changes on the CCS homepage. ;)

New York Red Bulls - Western conference champions 2008
Real Salt Lake - Eastern conference champions 2009

That's why. It's fucking Special person.

I'm glad they're now just doing away with the 'wildcard'. Stupid idea anyway. Best records get in.

non-neutral site? NO prob. to be the best you have to beat the best, and the home crowd helps the best be the best.

Quarter-finals helps to shake off the team that should have gotten a nod and into he playoffs, but really wasn't going to go further--this is fine.

Semi's and finals being a 2 game home and home series is good too.

All and all, it's MLS' world and they'l just change the rules when they see fit anyhow, at least they're locked into these changes for 2 years.

I like the new format for sure, is there a reason you are against anything in this, DePaul, or are you just a traditionalist?
