With the Cubs most likely going to pick a pitcher in the first round, here are some first round prospects that the Cubs should look at:

  1. Carlos Rodon, LHP, North Carolina State
  2. Jeff Hoffman, RHP, East Carolina
  3. Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd HS (Texas)
  4. Tyler Beede, RHP, Vanderbilt
  5. Sean Newcomb, LHP, Hartford
  6. Thomas Eshelman, RHP, Cal State Fullerton
  7. Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville
  8. Aaron Nola, RHP, LSU
  9. Brandon Finnegan, LHP, TCU
  10. Ben Wetzler, LHP, Oregon State
  11. David Berg, RHP, UCLA
  12. Erick Fedde, RHP, UNLV

Thoughts? Opinions? Who should the Cubs draft?

This will probably change a thousand times until the draft, but Beede has been the most connected to us. Rodon seems to be dropping by the start.

Carlos Rodon's stock has dropped and he's no longer considered a sure thing to go 1-1. Apparently his fastball has been average, his command may be slightly below average, and he hasn't been missing bats. I wonder if unseasonably cold weather in North Carolina has anything to do with it? Who knows, but if his velocity and command return as the season moves along, he shouldn't reach the Cubs.

Jeff Hoffman may have the highest ceiling of anyone on the list. Hard fastball, developing breaking ball, tremendous athlete.

Tyler Beede has really improved the one question mark he had, his command, and I'm beginning to wonder whether we have a shot at landing him anymore. As you guys may be aware, the Cubs' minor league pitching coordinator, Derek Johnson, was pitching coach at Vanderbilt during Beede's freshman year and no doubt played a part in recruiting him. Because the Cubs are so familiar with him, I think they take him if he falls to 1-4, even with their propensity for taking hitters in the first round.

Tyler Kolek is a big boy who can hit 100. I'd prefer them to draft a more polished college arm, however.

I don't believe Thomas Eshelman is eligible until next year's draft. Looks like a decent bet for a first round pick next year, along with fellow Titan starter Justin Garza.

I really like Erick Fedde's potential. He has a projectable frame and already has a good fastball/slider combo. But I would have a hard time justifying taking him 1-4 while his changeup lags behind.

The question is: if Rodon doesn't take significant strides this season and falls to the Cubs, do we take him, already knowing what he's capable of?

I think this might be the year they go arm first pick. I really thought earlier that they would follow their pattern of bat followed by of power arms. However have read and been told in multiple places that the arms are way ahead of the bats at this point. Beede seems like the best fit but Rondon dropping might screw that up since Rondon and Hoffman were likely to go first as arms.

Kolek has hit 102 and I wouldn't mind taking a risk on the high school arm to be honest, but high school arms are the riskiest group of prospects.
