I thought it meant "straight," as in straight line winds.

I see that google says that, although I have never had someone giving me directions in Spanish say that for go straight. I am not fluent, but derecho was always to hang a right.

The nation's top corn producing state lost 43% of its corn and soybeans to the derecho of August 10....ten million acres were destroyed...2020 just keeps on punching...

It's bad. I've never seen so many fields completely pummeled. Something like 60% of the Cedar Rapids area is still without power going on a week. There are more grain bins down right now than are up. My wifes family is from the Davenport area and my FIL was telling me he's never seen so many downed trees in his life.

One of my farmer buddies was telling me he will have to run his combine over his field to collect crop insurance. Even though it's down, can still be harvested but the yield will be shit. Has to do that before the insurance company will pay out. Sucks because it's a waste of combine hours and goes against his lease on it.
