L'AQUILA, Italy -- Defying assertions that earthquakes cannot be predicted, an Italian court convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter Monday for failing to adequately warn residents before a temblor struck central Italy in 2009 and killed more than 300 people.

The court in L'Aquila also sentenced the defendants to six years each in prison. All are members of the national Great Risks Commission, and several are prominent scientists or geological and disaster experts.

Umm... was there a direct negligence link? I just can't fathom how you can hold someone responsible for not reporting a earthquake that may or may not happen. Was there overwhelming evidence somehow that there were tremors or something that precluded said earthquake and they did nothing? Did they warn certain people and not others? I know I know , RTFA.

Perhaps this is why so many scientists are warning of the dangers presented by "global warming." They want to err on the side of not spending time in jail.

I didnt notice this the first time I read it:

Relatives of some who perished in the 2009 quake said justice has been done. Ilaria Carosi, sister of one of the victims, told Italian state TV that public officials must be held responsible "for taking their job lightly."

Sorry for your loss, but **** you. This isnt like issuing Tornado watches when the conditions are right, that generally involve people going into their basement. Now they are just going to have seismologists telling people to evacuate every time theres a blip on the radar and you'll be throwing them in jail for orchestrating hoaxes.

Italian scientists resign in wake of verdict

I mean what did they think would happen.....

Luciano Maiani, the physicist who led the National Commission for the Prediction and Prevention of Major Risks, resigned in protest of the verdict Tuesday afternoon, Italy's Civil Protection Agency announced.

"The situation created by the sentencing yesterday on the facts from L'Aquila is incompatible with a clear and effective performance of the functions of the commission and its role as a consulting bodies for the state," Maiani said in a statement released by the agency.

This is what happens when you expect everyone to be the next Da Vinci.

Really this is absurd as hell. What is wrong with the Italians?

Open ended question.
