he got his W2 and supposedly just then realized they didn't take out any federal taxes for the whole year. Everyone gets direct deposit and our pay stubs are online so he says he never checked them and didn't think anything of the amount of his checks.

He told the top guy there "either you guys pay my tax bill or Monday will be my last day" so later on I basically told him "it's been good working with you. There's no way they're paying your taxes". IT WAS THE COMPANY'S ERROR but this guy's position isn't exactly hard to replace and he should have the common sense to notice.

Turns out the company did agree to pay whatever he'll owe the govt.

Not sure if I should be happy the big bad company gave the little guy a break... or be mad this idiot didn't have to pay federal taxes and I did lol

Which side do you fall on?

I'm assuming you work for a big company that is able to afford that.

Either way, good for your co-worker, and quite honestly, good for your company.

If he filled his paperwork out right when he was hired and someone screwed the pooch with the info, he has a shaky leg to stand on.... especially so if he has been there multiple years and this is year one of the error.

If he was the one who screwed up.... he is a dumbass.

Who knows- Hiring a new guy is an expensive prospect. even if someone else moves up and you fill a bottom level position.
The cost of a new hire might be more expensive than paying his taxes.... especially if he is good at what he does.

If he truly had no clue there was no tax being taken out of his check, then he is a fucktard.... if he knew he put his forms in correct and planned to get them to pay a year of his taxes, then genius and devious :D

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can't have your company pay your taxes for you. There's going to have to be some book cooking with his compensation to make this legit.

lol it's the fucktard one I THINK. He did everything correct and honest on the forms. He just "didn't notice"

He is going to have to pay taxes on the taxes the company is paying him
I thought about that too..guess they can pay those next year:smug:

No, it happens all the time with sales contests in big companies. It's just that then you are liable for those taxes they pay

Depends if he filled out his w-4 right. Assuming he didn't claim exempt, then he is full in the right and could probably bring a suit against the company.
