Kickstarter is a place where people have good ideas, great ideas and ideas that are complete shit, like this one.
The great ideas usually get funded, the good ideas are ideas in which people like you and I come up with (but only our mothers fund us), and shit ideas are all over the board-- like the dude who was making potato salad, and ended up funding himself a cool 35k.
It's like the ultimate hipster joke, and I don't understand it, although it's a decent gateway to get ideas off the ground. I used it for my last documentary and successfully funded it through this method.

I have also seen nightmare scenarios in which people raise a good deal amount of money, pocket the cash and don't produce anything but a big "**** you" to their funders.
It can be a double edged sword.
