The Blackhawks took advantage of the struggling Blue Jackets on Thursday night, hammering six goals past Steve Mason.
There isn't just one story to the success the Blackhawks found in this game, other than the Blue Jackets continuing their abysmal season and Scott Arniel inching closer to his firing, they were excellent in many areas.
For one, the power-play finally produced. The most unlikely unit potted both goals on the man advantage for the Hawks, going 2-for-3 on the night. Brunette, Kruger, Montador, Leddy and Keith being the heroes on the 2nd unit, while the star studded 1st unit continued to struggle on the power-play.
At even-strength the Blackhawks line consisting of Stalberg, Toews, and Hossa dominated every aspect of the game and generated plenty of opportunities, sharing five points between the three of them.
The defensive core pitched in for a season high seven points. Among the standouts, Montador topped the list by notching a Gordie Howe Hat Trick (one goal, one assist, one fight) with honorable mentions to Keith, Leddy and Seabrook.
With Bollands status remaining unknown for the game, Marcus Kruger had to step up to 3rd line duties and 2nd power-play unit. He made the most of his chance, driving to the net with the puck and allowing Brunette to tuck in his third goal of the year. If he can improve his face-off ability, he can be a very important asset for the Hawks this year.
One area the Blackhawks continued their struggles in was keeping the puck out of their own net. In the last three games, the Blackhawks have allowed 12 goals. Although the offense was there the bail them out tonight, they have to tighten up defensively and get the penalty kill back on track.
All-in-all, the Blackhawks took advantage of a terrible team and made them pay on the score sheet. With the Flames in town, the Blackhawks will have a chance to begin a new winning streak if they can continue to elevate their game.
