Ovechkin? Please. He's all flash. Great on Sports Centre. Brutal in the clutch. End of discussion.

I agree with most of what he said about Jonathan Toews, a lot of people don't give him the credit he deserves because his regular season stats do not stand out. Most people do not realize that Toews takes care of his own end of the ice first and foremost and never cheats a play for an offensive chance. He also steps his game up on the biggest stages, voted best forward at the Olympics this year and the Conn Smythe attest to that.

It is true Ovechkin is lazy in his own zone and pretty much refuses to back check unless he sees an opportunity for a cheap hit, but to discount his talent to just a "sports center" player is ridiculous. Ovechkin is a one man break away with 3 guys in front of him and the only player that somehow can snap the puck past a goaltender from the blue line. I have played hockey for 15 years now and still have not seen anyone that can do what he can on the ice. He also can play the point and quarterback a power play and this season he really became more of a play maker and really improved his vision and passing. He is also the hardest working player in the offensive zone, period. He had great playoffs this season by anyone else but his own standards. When Wayne Gretzky himself says you have a 93 goal season in you then you know you're not just some "sports center" player.

Ovechkin is easily the most explosive offensive hockey player I've seen (and that doesn't include Gretzky, because I started with hockey once he was past his prime).

That story also compared Toews to Crosby, which was an interesting pick. I think Crosby has Toews beat on offense, but Toews is probably better on his own end of the ice.

But of the three mentioned, there is not a better leader than Toews.

I think that Ovechkin has to win something first.

I saw Goulet score on Bannerman from the red line -so it isn't like it hasn't ever been done before. I do get the sense that the players today are put on an unrealistic pedestal and it seems more like their superstardom is really a relative thing.

I never would have called Gretzky explosive -not in the sense that here is a guy that would do some spectacular move to get you out of your seats- he was much much more subtle and dangerous -- a guy like Savard was explosive -in that he would do moves that would lose guys on the bench their cups ... ok that is a little silly- but the point is the in Savard -there was a guy who was flashy as anyone ever -as well as explosive... it only takes you so far.

I'm not arguing that Ovechkin sucks- but that the ultimate test is winning it all - and in that Crosby has, as well as Toews now. I don't think JT has but started to scratch the surface -but it is a little like comparing Bryan Trottier to Mike Bossy- 2 different styles entirely.
