Duncan didn't even come close to replicating his 2010 Norris season last year; scoring 40 points in 74 games with a plus-15 rating. However, by comparison it was a step above his 2010-2011 campaign where he ended the season in the minus category for the first time since his rookie season. In the 2012 playoffs he certainly took a turn for the worst like many of the Blackhawks, only notching a single assist in 6 games against the Phoenix Coyotes.

Most would probably agree that Keith just needs to play better than what he has shown. His plus-15 rating could be considered somewhat generous considering Brent Seabrook had a major hand in helping Keith keep that afloat. I don't think many have much of an issue with a 45+ point output from Duncan, as long as he can couple that with safer play in his own end -- but we should be expecting at least 50+ points per year in his prime. If he is going to take risks, he needs to put up more points.

To Keith's credit in the last few seasons, he was constantly matched up against the top opposing players more-so than he was prior to winning the Cup -- as evidence shows according to a statistic referred to as quality competition*. In fact in the last few years he has typically been in the top 10-15 for NHL defenseman that face the hardest competition and before winning the Cup he was somewhere in the top 20-25. That said, two years of enduring tougher competition hopefully provided a learning experience for Duncan and he can elevate his play to provide the consistency the Blackhawks will need from him night in and out.

At 29 years old, Chicago has witnessed a baby-faced Keith grow into a well-seasoned veteran, three time all-star, Stanley Cup Champion, and Olympic Gold Medalist. We all know what he is capable of which can be the frustrating part. There is still plenty of hockey left in his skates and until he loses that speed there's no question he should be expected to play to the quality as one would expect out of a top defenseman in the NHL next season.

It's hard to predict how much he will produce next season, especially with the emergence of Nick Leddy, who has the potential of taking away some ice-time from Keith on the power-play after proving he can handle it last season. That said, Keith will still average his typical 25+ minutes per game as usual which will give him plenty of opportunity to elevate his game to Norris form once again.

As the highest paid player on the team, there really shouldn't be too many questions surrounding Keith. But at this point in his career there is one on my mind, does he elevate the play of players around him, or does he feed off them?

PREDICTION: 82 GAMES | 8 GOALS | 42 ASSISTS | 50 POINTS | PLUS-18

*Quality of Competition is provided by behindthenet.ca, it is the average relative plus-minus of opposing players, weighted by head-to-head ice time.

Keith biggest flaw in his defensive game is being sloppy low infront of the goalie. his smaller size doesn't help that problem. His offensive issues the last couple seasons has been getting pucks through traffic and simply drawing the puck blocker to him too much. how many shins does the guy hit now?

still one of the best transition players in the league though. still an important cog to this team.

good article ton. nothing to really disagree with.

Keith is always out of position in his own zone. What makes up for that is his quickness.

Elite defenseman? No. Top 5 in the league? No. (Weber, Chara, Suter, Doughty, Seabrook are better IMO). He had a career year obviously when he won the Norris, but I can't see him repeating that.

His shot from the point though, I will give him credit. He get's that sucker off quick and on net. Not many dmen can find the lanes he does.

We'll see how Suter is without Weber.

Not last year. He was constantly having his shots blocked.

From Norris to Nothing, huh?

Nah, not gonna buy into that. Although I do have an idea... Perhaps the Hawks can find a way for him not to have to play 32-34 minutes a game.

Either a shinpad or about 6' wide and high.

Honestly, I think he just needs to calm down a bit and play his game rather than repsating his Norris year. Take a deep breath and don't try to do everything; be patient. Just play a bit smarter and he should have a better year.

I wish sometimes instead of taking a long wind-up for a slapshot he would just flip the puck at the net the second he gets it. Crazy bounces happen, a scramble in front of the net and who knows what could happen.

Of course you need guys that will head to the net in traffic but I'd like to see him try every now and then to keep other teams guessing.

Detroit does this a lot. Sloppy goals result, but the guys playing in traffic get rewarded.

I'm totally serious. Last year was an off year on it, but he's good at getting them on net quickly.

Duncs usually only winds up to his waist (so half way) and then fires it.

He does have a good release and he has a fast drag to the right. Just finding the lanes the last little while has been his issue. Blueprint on him has been out for a while now. He needs to start looking for the pass more first instead of the shot. Lots of options on the puck Keith has been passing up on in favor of the shot which hasn't been there. Maybe that's part coaching style and system but I don't always buy that excuse.

Seabs has passed him on the "puck smarts" list. Not that there should be a competition btw the two. Just seems Seabs has still been evolving while Keith has sort of become stagnent and progression has stopped. Would still hate to see what the back end looked like without Duncs though. You gotta respect and admire a player who logs the minutes he does..there are bound to be some mistakes. You also have to admire his wanting of those minutes. It's not all the coaches forcing those minutes on him. Keith wants them.
