The Blackhawks were dominated by the Red Wings through the 1st period, but managed to inch their way back into the game sending it into overtime where they fell asleep at the wheel.
Detroit came at Chicago with a firestorm in the 1st period with 21 shots on goal as opposed to the Hawks 4 shots. Corey Crawford handled the barrage as well as he could stopping 19 of them--only allowing a Tomas Holmstrom tip-in on the power-play (typical) as well as leaking Todd Bertuzzi's backhand.
The Hawks weren't fortunate enough to get a tally on the power-play but Andrew Shaw cut the score in half with his 3rd goal of the year at the end of the 2nd period which seemed to put some pep in everyone's step for the final frame.
The 3rd period was a mirrored opposite of the 1st period. This time Chicago coming with the hurricane of shots, flinging 16 towards Howard while Crawford should have found comfort in only facing 5 shots, but Detroit managed to ring one off the post and another that slipped through Crawford and along the goal line but never crossing it. Jonathan Toews ended up tying the game with his 23rd of the year off of a Marian Hossa slapshot with under a minute remaining in the game and the Hawks held on until overtime where they fell apart yet again.
Todd Bertuzzi ended up with the game-winning goal, his 2nd of the night. Corey Crawford did all he could, facing 43 shots during the game and 9 of them during overtime. The Blackhawks were unable to muster a single shot on net during the extra frame.
What killed the Blackhawks was not only an awful start to the game, but late in the 3rd period Drew Miller took a high-sticking penalty that ended up being a 4 minute power-play for the Blackhawks. They only put two pucks on net during the sequence and grazed iron with another one. Their puck possession was awful, not only on the power-play but throughout the game and especially in overtime--many times they were caught chasing.
Had the power-play produced, the Blackhawks may have won another game but instead they see themselves with a 4-4-2 record in their last 10 games. Luckily for them, that extra point edged them over Detroit and the rest of the division but they still have a game in hand over them.
KRUGER RETURNS
Marcus Kruger returned to the line-up against Detroit, but managed to stay off the score-sheet in all positive light. Kruger committed the only Blackhawks penalty which ended up handing the Red Wings their 1st goal of the game. Across the board Kruger was unable to even gain a shot, not just on net but even an attempt. His night at the dot was short lived, only taking 5 draws total but only won a single face-off.
No one should expect Kruger to come in where he left off after being sidelined with injury, it may take some time for him to get his game legs back. But in his first match returning to the line-up... its certainly one to forget.
