The New Orleans Hornets have reached terms on a trade that will send guard Devin Brown to the Chicago Bulls for reserve big man Aaron Gray, according to NBA front-office sources.

The trade, barring an unforeseen snag, is expected to be formally approved by the league office later Monday.

The Hornets nearly traded Brown to Minnesota in hopes of reducing their luxury-tax bill in December, but the deal could not satisfy salary-cap requirements unless Brown agreed to waive a portion of the trade kicker in his contract. Brown declined.

This deal would net only a small luxury-tax benefit for the Hornets but bring them an extra big man for their bench. Brown has started 37 games for New Orleans this season, but the Hornets want to give more minutes to rookie Marcus Thornton and decided they needed the extra size.

In spite of its recent improvement, Chicago has been looking for perimeter help to help fill the void created by Ben Gordon's free-agent departure to Detroit.

Brown is averaging 9.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game this season. He's averaged 7.9 points per game in eight seasons with five NBA teams.

Gray was drafted by the Bulls in 2007 and has averaged 3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in his career.

The Hornets will have to make at least one more trade before the Feb. 18 trading deadline to get under the league's $69.9 million luxury-tax threshold.

Swapping Brown for Gray will reduce New Orleans' tax bill by an additional $107,075 after the tax-motivated salary-shedding trades of Rasual Butler and Hilton Armstrong.

To get under the tax line -- which will make the Hornets eligible to receive the rebate of nearly $5 million per team next summer that is paid out to all non-tax teams -- they must shed an addtional $423,536 before the deadline.

If we're adding salary hopefully that means there is another trade on the horizon to rid us of Kirk or John

Exactly Fola. We have to move Kirk or John to get one of the big free agents. Maybe this is insurance so we don't tank it after moving Kirk or John. Brown has very similar shooting numbers to both guys.

No, he is expiring contract.

This trade is basically for a backup guard/forward just in case if we trade 1 of Hinrich/Deng/Salmons and gives us an insurance.

Brown is not a bad 3pt shooter so he would definitely be help and best of all, this just means no more pargo/Hunter. Thank god.

I also hope the bigger trade is on the horizon (Amare/Boozer/Al Jefferson)???

Not really. Given the way Salmons has played since going to the bench (49% from the field, 57% from three, heck he's even cut his turnovers to under one a game) I can't see him opting in. He's only owed 5.8 million next year, with the number of teams that will be desperate to sign anyone I think he can probably get that next year and the two after that.

I really think trading Kirk or Salmons for cap space is counter-productive to fetching a free agent if it makes the team worse. Unless the trade is for a star now, we should probably sit tight, try to make the playoffs and have a decent showing, and then hope our max space lures someone after Salmons opts out.

Nice little deal for the bulls. Wonder if its kirk or Salmons leaving. Seeing as Brown is more similar to Salmons and we love kirk its probably john leaving.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Bulls
  2. Golden State Warriors
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
All trade possibilities aside, this is a good trade simply for the fact that we got a useful player at a position we need for a useless player. Now if we do end up trading Kirk or Deng or whoever for some star, I'll be ecstatic, but on the conservative side, this move is just a move to increase our crappy guard depth.

This is a good trade for the Bulls, regardless of what happens in the future. We traded a player who doesn't play for a player who will.

But I must say, I've always liked Gray and I'm sorry to see him go.
