I’m 34 years old. My step dad has been in my life since I was 9. I’ve always have told him he is my real dad. I don’t even talk or care to talk to my biological dad. Haven’t talked to him since 9. With that said, how do I go about having my step dad adopting me legally so he can legally be my father? I would like to surprise him with the proper paperwork this Christmas. Anyone have an idea on how much this will cost?

I don't have answers, but good luck with it. It will be a great surprise I'm sure.

No clue but that's an amazing thing to do. I have a half brother on my mom's side who my Dad took him as his own from an early age and he was a ****** and took my uncles last name, very disrespectful on his part.

I’d guess a consult with a family law attorney.
Hope it works out for you.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what if he doesn't want to legally adopt you?

Yeah I think he would have to agree to it so you can't really surprise him. Nice gesture though.

Very cool of you, OP.
I'm sure if you can't find the paperwork or whatever by Christmas even if you just talk to him about it, it will make his day.

Always a great moment when a non-blood father figure becomes a real parent to someone. Family comes in all forms.

There are ways to make it a surprise without having the official paperwork. Get creative and think of a cool way to present it to him.

As for the process, I'd do a quick google search for your specific state laws, then contact a family law attorney if that's the next applicable steps listed.

Found this with a quick google search - - - -

Guidelines and Requirements Vary
Guidelines and requirements for adult adoptions vary between states. If you're considering an adult adoption, check with your Secretary of State. Many states require formal notification of birth parents. Some require the adopted party to be of diminished capacity while others only need an agreement between the parties involved. If the adult up for adoption is married, some states will want to have the consent of the adopted person's spouse.

Well I think you can have the papers all filled out just needing his signature to confirm it, and give it to him as a gift. There's videos online of people doing that for christmas, birthdays, etc.

good luck with it, hope it works out.

I think that’s that way to go. For the other poster, my step dad already knows how I feel about him. I’ve done everything I could to show him he’s my real father. My aunts use to ask me, “don’t you want to see your real dad?” in front of my step dad and I. I would turn to my step dad and put my arm around him and tell them, I see my real dad everyday! He would start crying. Now I just want to make it official I’m a sense by making it legal.

Dude has been there since I was 9 years old and there were times he wouldn’t eat as long as my mom, brother, sister and I ate. Dude is a real man and father not like my drunk biological father that used to beat my mom and my brother.

Wouldn't that make you a legal heir though? Not sure if he has blood children. Does sound like a cool gesture, pretty sure you can't just "surprise him" with it considering the legal ramifications....

Maybe I can adopt Warren Buffet? :)
