I have a question here.

I want to transfer into University of Illinois at Champaign with a major in Secondary education and it says that I have to do 50 hours of tutoring at a middle or high school setting. My friend told me that I'm not allowed to tutor in my former middle or high school, is that true or is my friend just wrong?

Call the school or U of I and ask.

The only conflict would be getting old teachers/friends to sign off on your work. Other than that, why should it even be a problem? A grand portion of education applies the honor system. But yeah, read the policy or call someone who knows the policy.

I had an appointment with my college counselor tomorrow so I do plan on asking him this question. I would like to know before hand though because I am going to change my major but I am going to be slightly hesitant to pick secondary education if I have to tutor somewhere else other than my former high school.

To be honest that sounds more like a policy U of I has than a state requirement. Though I could be mistaken since I've been out of the program for 6 years now.

Your motives are none of my business. But here is some unwanted criticism of that comment.

If you are this concerned about 50 hours of tutoring, and where it has to be done, you are not going to make it in education.

my degree is in education, and the school was adamant about not tutoring at the schools i attended growing up. It's not a state req', at least here, but a university policy. And if that's the case - good luck finding a way around it.

What school did you go to? U of I?

I also found out in the form that it says that it recommends that you only tutor 25 hours in a school in your home district. It says it because they want you (in this case me) to get more experience around different schools and such.

It isn't a requirement though which I like. I guess I just want the easy way out? I think it is overall a recommendation to tutor and not a requirement anyways.....at least for now.
