Angelo: Bears plan to extend Smith's contract - Chicago Breaking Sports
He deserves it, IMO.
Lovie Smith won't have to worry about being a lame-duck coach in 2011.
Not unless negotiations blow up.
General manager Jerry Angelo said the Bears intend to extend Smith soon. His contract runs through the 2011 season.
"We very much want to extend Lovie," Angelo said Monday at a news conference at Halas Hall. "Our focus, our intent is to extend Lovie."
Angelo opened the door for an extension earlier this month and the Bears will now look to sign Smith to a third contract. Smith received a four-year extension after guiding the Bears to Super Bowl XLI after the 2006 season. The Bears failed to make the playoffs the previous three years and Smith was under a win-or-else mandate this year.
It's difficult for coaches to work under the final year of a deal, and the Bears are going to reward him after winning his third division title in seven years.
Smith basically declined to answer questions about his situation, saying that he wants to be the coach of the Bears for a long time to come.
He deserves it, IMO.
