Animated avatars?

I was browsing through some old threads and came across this poster who had a .gif that was animated that he was using as his avatar. Anyone know how to get a .gif or other file of that sort to appear animated as an avatar on here? Every time I've tried to upload one, it stays frozen.

My guess is that the .gif file has to be small (probably the size of that poster's avi or smaller). Might cause some major slowness on the board of several of us got one tho, lol.
