Just getting into it? Have your own home library? Naturally, if you're willing to read novels on a forum, a number of folk here might also be inclined to keep a few novels in the den.

My collection is out of control. I'm good with e-reading(prefer it *most* of the time, but not always, need the right display for sure), so right now I only keep rare or valuable books. Even with strict rules on what is considered a keeper, I still have shelves full, boxes full, and a few dozen put up on ebay, etc.

Some great-great grandfather or uncle, or whatever worked with Melville. So in some safe deposit box we have original manuscripts of Bartleby, the Scrivener and Omoo.

I have literally thousands of books, all the classics and then a whole bookshelf of just postmodernism, fiction and non. Wife finds rare ones at thrift stores monthly. Shopping for my next home, a dedicated library is one of our requirements. Right now our entire dining room is lined with bookshelves.

Older shit and first editions are cool, because they can be worth something. Saving the 45,000 printing of the Infinite Jest seems a bit too much. At that point, a Kindle is worth it.

My library currently resides in boxes under my piano due to lack of room. Bought a really nice copy of Paradise Lost not too long ago (Gustave Doré illustrated, gold edge pages, embossed leather, the works). I'm slowly building up a really nice collection of classics.

I have a buddy who is trying to build his own piano.

That sounds like a terrible idea. A guitar maybe, or a harpsichord, but a piano? Not a fucking chance. I mean, how in the **** does he plan on working the steel frame?

Yeah, not sure how he thinks it's actually going to happen. He saw that stuff that Nick Offerman was doing about building your own canoe, and he seems to think this will be the same spiritual thing that was/is.

One thing I have found over the years, is that I really love *original publisher* manufactured library bindings that go uncirculated or in some private library of some sort. Made for preservation, sold without dust jackets. I swear, these fly under the radar of collectors because they are turned off by actual marked, stickered, stamped, and beaten, regularly circulated ex-library copies. A lot of those library copies are bulk aftermarket glued on fabric that simply make the book thicker and have no real reinforcement of the pages other than maybe a layer of glue. On a shelf, they are color coordinated, size matching and look great on a shelf in a soft lit room. I don't have many library bounds that are original from the publisher and are not from a public library. So these have become my main target in collecting specific works.

I might have some tips thru a welder friend. He built an electric harp with a bunch of rebar and beams.

I still have the copy of "Catch 22" that you gifted me a few Christmases ago in the Slack Secret Santa thing we did.

I have about 50 or so, I like the tangability of a physical book and turning to the next page to see what happens next. Plus new books smell great.

I have a bunch of old books that I just want to sell. Is there an easy way to value/list them where people looking for books would actually find them?
