Been hating me job for a couple of years now, and thinking about doing something different.
My company has an opening for an industrial electrician apprentice at the same site. I talked to the head of electrical and was told I'd be shortlisted, but no guarantees of getting the gig. I think age may be the talking point when it comes to me. In me 40s. Still have plenty of work life left, but I know it would be a concern vs someone in their early 20s with an electrical background.
Its a 4 year program. Pay is reduced vs someone signed off, but doable. Pay rate steps once various markers are met @ 75-90k then 100k + OT etc to start once the apprenticeship is complete. Further qualifications can take it a lot higher. Pay is structured according to an industrial agreement and is non negotiable.
Thoughts on the industry? I know it may differ per sites, but thoughts in general? Our site has a lot of robotics etc. While we have engineers, the electrical team still set-up, modify, service, repair etc these systems along with any other electrical component on site day to day. Its def a compartmentalized environment. For example, a fitter isnt even allowed to replace/touch a motor without an electrician handling any electrical connections.
