Just got into him. I've known the song, "Old Man" forever and I absolutely love it. Just started searching for more of his songs on youtube. Any recommendations? Heart of Gold is on atm, and it's good.

Old Man is just such a nice song, it just makes me think a lot, about memories and stuff.

He's still killin' it in 2013

Man, he looks so different from being ~26 to 68. Obviously hes 40+ years older, but it's crazy he's still playing.

Neil Young is not only a great artist but considered a rock pioneer by many..

The album Harvest is considered on of the greatest of all time. This was from an era when artist were expected to create 8 great songs every album not just one. Check out the song "words" it was always a favorite.

Southern Man is another interesting song. Young laments the state of Alabama for their backwardness and slavery. It's a scathing indictment and created quite a stir in Alabama where they burned his albums and he didnt perform for years. In response Lynard Skynard wrote the song "sweet home Alabama" which you will remember as it's been on the radio constantly for 40 years. They write "Heard old Neil put us down. Hope Neil Young remembers Southern Man don't need him around". In the song they have a line: "singing songs about the subway" which is also a rip on Young and that why would anyone write songs about the subway. There is also a great song called Needle and the Damage Done which is about the life of a herion addict

His previous albums After the Gold Rush and Everyone Knows this is Nowhere sold a zillion copies and have some of the greatest songs written. I love the guitar work on Cowgirl in the Sand. Down by the River is fantastic

Southern Man

Here are the lyrics of Southern Man which describe the life slaves live for 200 years

"Southern Man"

Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

I saw cotton
and I saw black
Tall white mansions
and little shacks.
Southern man
when will you
pay them back?
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Southern man
better keep your head
Don't forget
what your good book said
Southern change
gonna come at last
Now your crosses
are burning fast
Southern man

Lily Belle,
your hair is golden brown
I've seen your black man
comin' round
Swear by God
I'm gonna cut him down!
I heard screamin'
and bullwhips cracking
How long? How long?

Some music is timeless and most is throw away. Much of what Neil Young wrote was appropriate 40 years ago and will be appropriate 40 years from now or 400 years from now. The song Old Man will describe someone's relationship with his father 200 years from now

Another timeless song is Only Love Can Break Your Heart. It could describe a break up 300 years ago or something you just went through with a girl today

"Only Love Can Break Your Heart"

When you were young
and on your own
How did it feel
to be alone?
I was always thinking
of games that I was playing.
Trying to make
the best of my time.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I've never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Someone should call him
and see if he can come out.
Try to lose
the down that he's found.

But only love
can break your heart
Try to be sure
right from the start
Yes only love
can break your heart
What if your world
should fall apart?

I have a friend
I've never seen
He hides his head
inside a dream
Yes, only love
can break your heart
Yes, only love
can break your heart

Love Neil Young. I remember as I got into junior high and started getting more interested into 'studying' music and varying my tastes, Neil Young was one of the first guys I kind of "found on my own". As I've gotten older, I've really come to appreciate just how talented he is, whether it's his Buffalo Springfield stuff, solo endeavors, Crazy Horse, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.... he's just awesome.

Check out 'helpless" by Crosby stills Nash and young. One of my personal favorites. He's done so much though, and it's difficult to find a song I don't like. I find it pretty amazing that his songs can vary so much in style yet still be uniquely Young. He seems effortlessly *proliferate quality songs which span country-rock-psychedelic-garage.

Also, Cinnamon girl has one of the best one-note guitar solid I've heard lol.

Ha. I was just listening to Neil Young this morning for the first time in months. Put on After the Gold Rush, almost forgot how good it was.

Try Harvest Moon, it's a fantastic love song.

Neil Young is great, but he's one of those artists that during concerts is notorious for not playing his 'hits.' I mean, I guess it's his choice and all, but that does get a little annoying when you paid $65, maybe playing Cinnamon Girl isn't the worst thing against your artistic integrity. Either way, I enjoy his music and I still spend the money to see him in concert.

Probably my two favorites. I'm a fan, though I can't say I delved much into his music.
