Nope. I had a friend in the Air Force who was originally from down under. Not that it helps you any.

Did you hear the "DING" of the Southwest Airlines Wanna Get Away promo on your computer? Moving? Long vacation? What the hell are you going there for? We need facts man, facts.

I swear, if you bring a fucking large ass spider back.... Oh and you'll be loved by the locals if you think the PM is a ******. He's the running joke of the country.

I have a general idea about the east coast as I have a friend that traverses to Sydney frequently. He lives out near Brisbane.

If there's anything in Sydney I'd check out ---

- The Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge --- The immediate icons of Sydney.

- If you like the Olympics, the Olympic Stadium is still there. Its called ANZ Stadium now.

- There's loads of architecture throughout the city. Sure, it isn't Chicago by any means. It never will, but there's lots of older buildings there, too many to name. I could get down to it, but it would be too long to read.

Sydney is a cultural mecca that I would love to visit someday, but I doubt I will. Take full advantage of the experience, man.

I was in Australia and New Zealand this past winter for a little over 3 week. Loved every minute of it and wished I had more time due to the distance between the sights.

Melbourne ---- There for 2 days, one day was Christmas so not much open.

--- Melbourne is a large city and sorta like Miami minus South Beach.

--- I did dig the open air zoo (killing time on Christmas day while waiting for other people).

--- The Centre for the Moving Image was kind of modern artsy cool.

--- Degraves Street is kind of a neat walk to kill an afternoon.

--- Beyond that, there are plenty of metropolitan things to do, so you will not be lost for time.

Sydney --- Spent 6 days there.

--- Much more laid back than Melbourne (which is laid back).

--- Easy to walk around if you want to as it is not too big (thought I am a big walker over cabs anyway).

--- Obviously see the Orchestra Shell.

--- The Bridge Climb is a little expensive, but I thought worth it to get a great view of the city and surrounding area. It is also very easy, and the tour guides have a ton of info. We did the sunset tour to get the "romantic shot"

--- Take a water taxi to get a view of the city from the inlet, and it is cheaper than one of the tours. You can get to the ferrys from the Circular Quay which has something to do around there as well.

--- The QVB has some old world Victorian charm if you need to kill time or want to get some souvies.

--- Hyde Park is worth a visit.

--- Blue Hills were ok, but I don't think it was worth the time to get there if you have limited time.

Ayers Rock (if you can get there) --- One of the most sacred Aboriginal sites, and one that you can visit. Neat tour and some of the oldest exposed rock on this Earth.

Port Douglas (if you can get there) --- Outstanding Jungle Forest with some of the oldest plants in the world. Can also get to a nice, and well controlled, spot on the Great Barrier Reef.

New Zealand is something were you need at least a week, and if not, try to hit Auckland, Wellington OR Christchurch, Taranga, and if possible Milford Sound. Let me know if you are truly going to go there and I can give you more information. We ended up hitting about 8 cities there.

I love this board.

I am going down there for a wedding. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time there. I have 7 days. I think most of that time will be spent in Melbourne. Like I said we may try to hit Sydney. I know there is a nice beach in Melbourne that has wild penguins.

Thanks Biscuit. You are chock full of knowledge.

This really is kinda like a once in a lifetime thing. When I win the lottery, I will take like a 2 month vacation. Christmas Island to watch the crab run, Australia to see everything there. Serious, Australia is huge. New Zealand to see it proper.

I am actually hoping to make it to Ireland and Scotland in the next year or two.

All I know is that the term is "Prawn on the Barbie" not shrimp. The advertisers changed the dialogue of the commercial because they figured the average dumbass american doesn't know what the smeg a "Prawn" is.
