Are the Cubs Trying to Move Ryan Dempster? |

According to a report from the Boston Globe, the Cubs would love to move starting pitcher Ryan Demspter. This is the first we have heard of the Cubs trying to move Demspter. The only starting pitchers that has made the news of whom are on trade block are Matt Garza and Carlos Zambrano. However, if the Cubs are in a full rebuild move, the Cubs trying to move Demspter would not surprise me at all.

The Boston Globe states; “The Cubs would love to move the 34-year-old and his $14 million paycheck (or part of it). He has pitched more than 200 innings four straight years but his 4.80 ERA and 1.448 WHIP last season aren’t appealing.”

Ryan Dempster could have become a free agent this off-season , but opted to pick up his player option. Demspter picked up his 14 million player option on October 29th. Dempster was wise to do so because he probably wouldn’t have received 14 million per year on the open market. Also, Dempster is a Chicago guy and was a move for him to stay in Chicago.

In 2011, Demspter pitched 202.1 innings and had a 4.80 ERA. Also, Dempster walked 82 and struck out 191. For the most part, Dempster had his ups and down in 2011… 1 game he would pitch excellent and another game he pitches poorly.

If Team Theo are seriously about rebuilding the Cubs, trading a 34 year-old is the right move. The Cubs may not get much for Dempster, as he’s a free agent after the 2012 season. But you never know, teams are desperate for starting pitchers and do overpay. Dempster does pitch over 200 innings is most of the seasons and that’s very appealing. Maybe the Cubs can get a young ready starter and a prospect with potential. Just like the Sean Marshall trade and the players they received. Also, with the new CBA, trading Dempster if the best. Since their out no Type B free agents and if anything, that’s what Dempster would be.

I don’t see Dempster being traded this offseason, but if the Cubs are officially out or close to being out, he will be a trade deadline trade. I think they would be able to get more for Demspter on or close to July 31th. Also, hoping he has a good season leading up to the trade deadline.

Side Note: The report is out of Boston, so take the rumor for what it’s worth. Reports out of Boston have been far from reliable this off-season and this is the first we have heard Ryan Dempster’s name.

I am sure the Cubs would love to trade Ryan Dempster, but since he has a full NTC it really limits what the Cubs can do.

I think his family's entrenched in Chicago so it's unlikely that it happens unless Dempster is really generous and OK's it. I'd think it's more realistic at the trade deadline or by the end of August at the waiver deadline than right now, though. Less time away from family.

BleacherNation just added this interesting tidbit:
UPDATE: A couple post-publishing notes from a source. Apparently Ryan Dempster has indicated to the Cubs that, if they truly want to move him and find a good deal, he would strongly consider accepting a trade, in part because of how well the organization treated him when no one else would give him a shot (good guy). The source adds, as I guessed, that the Matt Garza talks are getting “hot and heavy right now.” No rest for the weary.
Take it for what it is worth. Given the fluky bad April Dempster had that really distorted the season he had, I am not certain that letting Dempster pitch a couple months to start the year might not be a better option (kind of the same deal as Marmol where moving them now would be example of selling low on guys).

My guess is that if they have to send too much money along in a trade and the prospect they get back is just a throw-away, they'd be more inclined to just have Dempster pitch out his contract.

I wasn't talking about our own beloved Captain Obvious :D

It's just business 101. If you have to give up too much for crap prospects, you might as well let the guy give you full production in his walk year.

Ah, thanks for the clarity, and that is sort of my position on trading Dempster at the moment. You would have to figure that if Dempster pitches like he did outside of April last year, that he would fetch far more at the deadline then he would now. It is a risk, but given the likely returns now I think it is a reasonable one to take.

Moves for the sake of moves isn't going to improve this team. Starting pitchers are always in demand, and if Dempster pitches well during the season his return could be much higher than it is now. That said if they can find someone willing to offer something of value for him and convince Dempster to waive his NTC, I would be very happy.

They could basically do what they did with Ted Lilly.

My thoughts about trading Dempster will wholely depend on what they get back for him.

Trade him for any prospect with a chance.

It'd basically be a salary dump even if they got that prospect with a chance (probably not a very good one). Dempster's age and likelihood of decline sap his trade value. Might as well just have Dempster eat 200 innings in a Cub uniform.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Chicago Fire
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Arizona Wildcats
get a spec or two and we will probably have to pay 70-80% of his salary

Demp's a good guy, I'll be sad to see him leave but I feel like he'll be on his way out sooner than later.
