Are there any examples of interim coaches succeeding?

Not short term success, but winning the job and becoming the long term solution? I figured there have to be but can’t think of any off the top.

Not really, no. Which is why I think we shouldn't give it to Thomas Brown, even if he does well in the next few games.

Usually when a HC gets fired, players seem to have a boost in their performance. Whether that's because they're happy the HC is gone, they're rallying around the interim HC, or because they are auditioning for whatever comes next.... it seems to be short lived and rarely spills into the following seasons.

That’s a really bad list 😂

Most coaches fail whether they were interim, 1st time or retreads. So overall success rate is going to be low regardless of your route to HC. However in the interim group you have.

1. Jeff Fisher coaching 16 years and falling 1 yard short of a potential SB win.

2. Fontes coached the Lions to 4 playoff berths.

3. Garrett went to 3 playoffs appearences.

4. Marvy Levy - 4 Super Bowl appearences.

5. Mary S had several playoff appearences with Browns

Good things can happen with certain interim HC's

I feel like Marv Levy deserves as asterisks because he had 5 years of NFL head coaching experience prior to his reign in Buffalo.

Jason Garrett missed the playoffs 6 out of 9 seasons and should have been fired much earlier and only stuck around because Jerry Jones loved him.

Jeff Fisher was .500 or less for is first 4 seasons as HC. Also had a very patient owner.. and to me, was one was the most overrated head coaches in NFL history. 5 playoff wins in 22 years (with 3 of them coming in one year)? Yuck.

To me, Fontes was probably the most impressive considering he had success with the Lions.
