Makes sense. The higher the metabolic rate, the more energy an organism needs. Thus, the chances are that if there is a shock to their food supply, they would die out quicker than a species with a lower metabolic rate and hence less energy needs.

Not much application currently to humans though since agriculture and animal husbandry ensures a relatively stable food supply.
