I know a lot about the military. What are your motives? What job (that you are eligible for) are you going for?

It depends on the swings and quotas. When I joined, 9/11 happened, and the military had a huge surge in both needs and recruitments(yes, people didn't hide when a legit war was around the corner, they actually joined at a higher rate). Because of the quotas, I had to compete with other people. I maxed my GT score on the first try, so they gave me job and post of choice. (and my recruiter tried to talk me out of the infantry, although I wanted to become SF(infantry is the fastest route), eventually I worked into a Ranger bat and settled). While the GT requirement for infantry has been the lowest, the actual GT scores average the highest among all MOS's(Military occupation). So if you're not book smart(compared to your peers at the time of recruitment), you might not get infantry.

My point is that you are going to be at the needs of the Army, and the quotas are different every cycle.

As a reservist, you have almost no control. Now, if you went National Guard, your fate would be in the hands of your state's governor, but this means that you would experience instate deployments far more often. If your state's constituents like to vote in warmongers, then forget it. Your state's national guard will go wherever the Pentagon wants you.

If you have completely changed your mind, then thats cool. I'm disgusted with our hyper warfare and world policing of Bush/Obama policies, so I don't really want to see too many friends join. But if you decide that this is some kind of experience that you absolutely want, I'll help you as much as possible, before laying out the details with an actual recruiter.

I'll ask you the same questions that I asked Dustin.

Oh, and I'm not branch biased(because it's a useless rivalry). You go where you fit the best for whatever reason.

it kinda depends on which system you like. if you're lookin for combat, do you wanna fly, be in the infantry, or use stealth thru water? or do you wanna be another occupation within it?

I'm biased. Active Duty Coast Guard here - can't imagine any other service.

All branches have IT jobs and control system work, including different maintenance fields.

If you're just a software guy, don't hold your breath. Most networking/installers/help-desk types are DoD civilians/contracts, with the small pie left over for people who change careers after getting some seniority(people that get hurt, hardship transfers, ect.) I could be wrong though, maybe there is a field somewhere that is recruiting up/phasing out old configurations within.

I also have to add this little disclaimer. Once you're out of the military, the amount of military discrimination is incredible. Employers who believe that you serving = you believe in war, or you serving was due you being desperate for work, or thought of it as an alternative to college. Or my favorite, they think everyone who served in combat has PTSD, and live their lives programmed. :smh:

They don't have Infantry in the Reserves, it's a support-only component.
