Not sure how many of you know this but I am an abstract artist. Thought I would share some of my works with you as I will be starting my website soon and finally getting into the business end of sales and not just producing works. Production is what I love the sales is where I lack a lot of know how and frankly some confidence. However I have been getting some good feedback lately and have been able to show more now that I finally have a decent portfolio and collection done. I am producing works at one of the highest speeds I have ever produced. I am in a good place right now as far as this. Have also been given a chance to produce work for the hotel rooms in the building I work for. This is an exciting time for me and it's an opportunity I have been waiting for to get my works seen more.

Offers and interest have been good lately so this is what is pushing me to start focusing on the sales end more now.

I am happy to share some of my works with you guys and maybe get some feedback. While Abstract art isn't every ones taste and many of you will probably roll your eyes and question much of what you see I still value any feedback negative, positive, constructive and even asinine lol. I also do some pop art pieces but Abstract is where my passion lies.

I also thought it would be a good time to try and start another visual art thread seeing I do know many on here do have a love for it such as myself. Outside of the Hawks painting and the visual arts is my passion in life. I am always excited to talk and discus art even though I will always be one who will always find more meaning in the actual production side. But I like hearing what everyones opinions on the visual arts and love even more so seeing other peoples works or favorite works.

So Yah this is our official Visual Arts thread. We have one for Movies, Literature, Music. Lets see how this one goes on. I promise I won't start a thread about Stage and Theater lol.

I will start you guys off slow. This is one of mine. Its acrylic on 6 foot by 4 foot canvas. As of right now it is untitled. I have been getting a fare bit of attention with this one which has made me happy.

I don't have the best camera at the moment so none of these current pics will do my works the greatest justice.

This one is obviously more pop art style. Again not my strongest style but I do enjoy the break from abstract to this.

It is acrylic on canvas.

LOSER.

But seriously this thread is 100% pure GENIUS tcd! Perhaps my one of my greatest regrets was getting my degree in Lit. instead of Art History. You know your Besties Samesies and I love, love, LOVE the subject of art so let's get this ***** started up!

I have absolutely ZERO creative or artistic talents and am thusly relegated to merely being hugely admireous of artists---it's the way I was raised. I can get pretty hardcore and have been known to travel out of town to other cities for the weekend to see exhibits or retrospectives I feel are perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. And then of course I try to take advantage of events in Chicago naturally. Since I can't create anything of my own I do try to collect on a small scale---subscribing to the notion that one should just acquire what strikes one's fancy in. . .within the limitations of one's budget, heh.

As for beefing up your online presence, that I wholeheartedly concur with---the interwebs has been revolutionary in looking at self-promoting artists and direct sales. I have been known to buy pieces from artists on art websites/online artist collectives, Etsy, auction sites, and artist websites. Not even 10 days ago, I followed a link to a painting on an art website to the artists site and then spent a few hours going through several hundred of her voluminous amounts of work across at least five different mediums. I wound up getting that original painting I saw that led me to the other stuff and is en route to my office from Vancouver as a matter of fact---a tiny little 4x6 acrylic that I found really whimsical that I think I will put in my foyer. As I mentioned to BlackhawkPaul in a thread of his that linked to galleries of some of his wife's artwork, I think it's hugely important for artists in this digital age to make their work available for sale in multiple places online. There's a whole subset of people like me who are willing to take chances on just seeing really HQ pics and making blind faith purchases without having to see the work in person beforehand based on nothing more than our visceral reactions to the piece. It strikes me as so much more democratic than even when I attend art fairs/festivals where so much of the art is exorbitantly expensive IMO--though of them all I have to admit Around the Coyote in Chicago has been pretty accessible and I have been able to purchase a couple of very small scale works.

Anyhoo---I just thought I'd respond to some of your points in your OP and throw out some blah, blah, blah art chatter to get this thread percolating.

Well done Only Straight Non-Asian Dude in Vancouver!

Salivating here. LOVE this piece. Rothko is one of all-time Top 3 maybe artists so you can understand why I am immediately attracted to this acrylic right? Hee.

You have an interesting blend of textures going on here which is appealing to me---especially the the thick brush stroking.

More please.

Thanks Books.

Mark Rothco? He is an "abstract expressionist" lord although he would never accept that label himself, he rejected the term "abstract" to describe his own works or others (The entire concept of abstraction is always debated). To be mentioned in the same breath as him is intimidating to be honest. But I like that. Caught you on the brush strokes though. This all done with a palette knife as most of my works are. It's funny, brushes don't feel right in my hands and I have a difficult time manipulating paint with a brush. Paint manipulation and texture is always my main goal when I approach a piece. Hard to explain why brushes fight in my hands, perhaps they run to soft for me and I don't enjoy the extension feeling.

I would like to think human emotion as it sits in space and time is my main theme in most of my works. Can be intimidating as hell sometimes using that as a study. Rothco I believe was a master of expressing human emotion and behavior with his works even though he probably would never admit it was a theme in his works.

Rothco (or Rothcowitz). I believe there are a few Rothcos at the Art Institute Of Chicago? Hard for me to pick a favorite of his. His works with the deep red tones attract me right away though.

"Red, Brown, And Black" Might be my fav of his simply because of how it manipulates the light around it.

I can blab about these things forever.

Loved your first post. I will reply to some of that at a later time when my head isn't looking at one of my pieces on the floor wondering if I should adjust a few things on it. Always distracted..hard to know when a work is done.

I don't know art, but I know what I like. I like these. I like the first one you posted and the one where you broke away from the abstract.

Then again, dogs playing poker and anything on velvet scream class to me.

I'm a pretty standard art guy. Ansell Adams to Escher. I don't really have a particular style, I just know what I like and it's usually the more mainstream stuff. Abstract is fine unless you are trying to trick me into thinking that a pile of dog shit is a rainbow. I didn't like your first one at first untill I saw it in your 3rd pic on the wall in the room. It looks pretty good in context. The second one is too hippyish for me. It sounds weird but to me it's pretty standard and unimaginative. The third one is ok, just not my style.

Correct---but the Art Institute sadly only has about a handful of Rothkos. The motherload in the US is at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. which has about 250---a veritable visual spectacle or orgy for a Rothko fan! Back in 2001 (?) I traveled to D.C. to see the massive retrospective of his entire career at the National Gallery figuring I would never have another opportunity in my lifetime to see so much of his work all at once spanning his whole artistic life from school until his death. Holy shit was it worth it! I love traveling to see the Nat'l. Gallery so much. . .sighs. They put on such fucking impressive special exhibits in both wings. Actually, I like the couple of dozen works that the MoMA has too, especially their ones from the late 30's to mid 40's before he moved away from Surrealism. Additionally, I love the Rothko Chapel in Texas. Of the Art Institute's holdings, "Unitled (Purple, White, and Red)" has always been my fave. . .

TCD you are pretty good. When are you going to paint an abstract portrait of Ladd? But seriously those are good paintings.

Now that's art.

My favorite painting is Nighthawk. I don't know why I just like it.

TCD I'll be brutally honest, I'm not an art type and I just don't "get" your work, the pop piece was nice the rest...its beauty is lost on me.

TSD needs to get up in here, he's shown me some of his work and it is awesome.

I think you should name the 1st unchristened one "Modano's vag".

Of the 4 paintings I think I like "Brash" the most, though "abstract" is not my cup of tea in general. Do you work in any other mediums?

Say what? Has that little foul-mouthed turd been hiding secret talents and an artistic sensibility from me? Asshole.
