I don't post frequently but I'm a long time lurker/creeper and I have a favor to ask.
The short story: Please log in to facebook, go to https://www.facebook.com/questions/247872155259594/?refid=7
and vote for Manteno vs. Coal City.
The long story: I'm a school psychologist at Manteno High School. Somehow, NBC5 chose our upcoming football game vs Coal City as a potential game of the week. If our game receives the most votes by noon on Wednesday, we'll bus our students to Coal City to have a school vs. school pep rally, broadcast live Friday morning. Our students on one side of the gym, their students on the other. I'm big on school spirit but I also have additional motivation to win this contest. One of the programs I work closely with is for students challenged by significant cognitive disabilities. Last year, we began a Best Buddies type program to match typical students with our students challenged by disabilities in order to foster friendships and reduce the stigma of cognitive impairments. We were pleased with our success, but were seriously lacking male student involvement. This year, our program is bigger and better, thanks in large part to the involvement of a handful of male varsity athletes, many of them football players, who stepped up, joined our program, and showed our students (and some of our staff) that it's okay to hang out with "those kids." They've fostered friendships and improved the lives of our students in such a way that we could never repay them. As hard as we've worked to show others that here is nothing to be afraid of, that students challenged by disabilities are typical kids in so many ways, nothing we have done has made as much of an impact as these "cool kids" setting the example of acceptance, tolerance, and understanding. Please help me help them win this contest. Our odds of winning are slim, as the combined enrollment of MHS and CCHS doesn't even add up to some of the other schools' enrollments. We need all the help we can get. Even though it's a long shot, it's the least I could do to say "thanks" to these kids. Thanks in advance for your help.
