I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima GXE Automatic. I have had the car die on me a few times. The first time I thought it was dead as I could only get it to run for maybe 10 seconds while it idled rough and then stopped running all together. No loss of power (Lights still worked)

I have it towed to my mechanic and after two days of testing cannot get car to fail. He did clean throttle that had some carbon build up on it.

Car ran better of sorts, but after driving it on the expressway for about an hour, I slow down to come to an off-ramp and the car dies. I restart it and it runs all the way to work, but a touch bumpy.

I take a guy I work with to test out the car at lunch and of course can't show any issues with the car. He said could be build up and to just gun it every now and then to break lose any build up. I add a bottle of fuel injector and heet from STP to my tank. I get home ok.

Car rests for about 20 hours and it starts, but for a moment seems rough, so I rev it up parked. No issues til I get to work (about 1:15 of run time) and the car seems to want to quit as I back into my car spot. It does not quit though.

Any guesses as to the issue since the mechanic did engine, battery, alternator checking only? I am leaning toward perhaps an issue with the fuel line somewhere.

Thanks again for everyone's help as always.

Fuel line is possible. Also a loose wire or bad ground somewhere. Does it die while driving, or idle? Automatics stall too, if the torque converter is worn down(that's why I ask)

If you took it to a mechanic, they should have compression tested it, which would eliminate a lot of culprits with your description. So now everything is a shot in the dark, and I doubt anyone can really figure out the issue over the internet. Sorry brett.

I feel like I can build most anything, I can run electricity, and I'm proficient in HTML...but when it comes to cars, I'm as ignorant as they come.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Most fuel pumps die off after a decade. Tell a mechanic that worth anything to check your fuel line pressure. It's butt easy and can be done in minutes. Get the reading and look up what the pressure range is for your model car. If it's not your fuel pump it maybe something as simple as a Fuel relay sensor. Those are less than 20 bones. Were you recently in an small accident? Sometimes, when you get hit or bump something the FI switch resets. That's an easy fix too.

Bottom line what you're saying is you have the power. The car starts, especially when the motors cold, so it's def. a fuel issue. Your motor isn't getting the right amount of fuel. All relatively simple fixes. Can't believe a mechanic gave up so quickly. You should never return there. ever.

My mechanic got my busienss for life when they replacd a sensor and I still had a gas smell issue and saw the leak with snow on the ground. Brought it back and they replaced the tank all tehy way back to the gas door free of charge and apologized for not fixing it the first time. It was $1600.00 that I didn't have to come up with. But that was a different car.

Car is automatic and I believe does has a computer in it. The receipt says Engine check, but perhaps they didn't consider a fuel issue. I will have to call them and find out.

The car dies when breaking after being driven for a period of time is what I am noticing.

does it rev rpms when at a light? It sounds like most def. a fuel issue. If your car is a 98 it will have a computer in it. But that might not tell you where the problem is.

Not trying to start anything between you and your lifetime auto mechanic but a gas tank should not cost anywhere near 1600.00 bones. They fed you a line of shit dude. A gas tank is most likely aluminum so they either swapped it with an old one or JB welded the shit out of it for 5 bucks. Nothing is free in this world man. Nothing. Even if they hand picked out a brand new shiny gas tank that hasn't been on another car(you do realize that if it was on another car it aint new!) that would run them about 250.00. They sound like crooks buddy. Just my opinion though

That would rule out the tq converter, and you're left with the fuel system and cooling system. The ECU would be a long-shot, but not ruled out.

How many miles does the car have on it. Im with Marylandbear in the fact that is indeed a fuel system issue. Depending on the mileage of the car I would guess your fuel pump is about to fail. But that doesnt rule out a possible clogged fuel filter or even clogged fuel injectors. Yes your car does have a ECU(computer) in it but unless that is a known issue with those cars during that time period, then I wouldnt consider that a possibility.

Fuel pumps fail in this manner. I doubt it is the computer.

Fuel pump & filter are possibilities

Torque converter is still a possibility if it has an electronically controlled clutch in it

Ignition system is possible if it has a distributor(I don't work on Asian cars so I'm guessing here)

It sounds like you need to pay really close attention to the circumstances surrounding the problem and take your mechanic on a road test with you. I know that every time someone drops a car off to me with some weird-ass problem I don't usually spend a lot of time on it unless I can duplicate it.

Maryland,

The initial quote of $1600 came from the Honda dealership. When I went to my local mechanic he never quoted me a price.

Also the RPMS do not run high, it might actually run low, but I have not been able to catch it.

So would you agree that the fuel injector and the heet won't resolve the issue when this tank of gas gets all used up?
