Veteran NBA coach Del Harris, who spent this season as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls, is retiring, a source told ESPNChicago.com.

Harris, who turns 72 in June, has been coaching for 50 years in the NBA, collegiate and high school levels, as well as overseas. He compiled a 556-457 (.549) record in 12 seasons as an NBA head coach with three different teams -- the Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers.

The 1994-95 NBA Coach of the Year with the Lakers, Harris also guided the Rockets to the NBA Finals in 1981.

A great coach and even greater guy.

This is what I like about coaches not named Phil Jackson. Del Harris was willing to coach the 1990 Milwaukee Bucks. The '81 Rockets. Stuff like that.

I always liked Del and know the game will miss him.

He will probably be missed by NBA fans from everywhere not named Chicago. The game will miss him.

I like that idea but I'd really love a bigs coach. We sorely need one.

Yes we do need one. Hire my man Reggie to take Dels spot and give Pete a job upstairs and replace him on the bench with a bigs coach.
