What is BABIP?

BABIP stands for batting average balls in plays. The theory is that there are only 3 outcomes in baseball that only the pitcher and hitter control which are strikeouts, walks and homeruns. Any other situation in baseball has other defenders factoring into the outcome. BABIP is basically batting average when you take out the at bats and hits that result from strikeouts and homeruns.

Hitters BABIP tends to be around .120+LD%(line drive percentage). When you hear about hitters being lucky or unlucky it is because their BABIP is much higher or lower than that number. The idea being that over the course of the season the number of hard hit at 'em balls will even out with the bloop hits to around that number usually.

This wasn't exactly bad luck, just bad baseball, but with the Cubs, it's a combination of both
