Notice Barry Sanders had nothing to say about Mike Ditka.

Coincidence....I think not

When teams played Walter they felt beat up. When they played Sanders, they felt tired.

I'd say that statement says it all. I think as pure runner, Sanders was the one but Walter the better overall player.

Sanders was probably the best runner of all time. Walter was one of the greatest football players of all time.

Sanders had a couple of issues:

-Inconsistant yardage: A typical series for him might be : 2, 9, -3, -5, 6, -2 and 15. He had so many rushing attempts where he lost yardage.Payton and Jim Brown rarely lost any yardage

-Goal line play: Sanders was often pulled from the game on goal line plays. If you are the best RB how do you get pulled out in a crucial situation? Payton and Brown were there best at most crucial situation, not pulled out of the game

I am more going by the eye test. As far as pure running talent Sanders was insane. If i am putting my all time team together I would take Walter every time.

Sanders was the most elusive back I've ever seen but that's not what you need inside the 5. Both Walter and Brown hit the holes hard and fast and if there wasn't a hole, Walter would simply leap over everyone. But really, the most amazing thing about Walter was that he that he never missed any games....I think he missed one early his rookie year(which he said he could have played) and played every game after that. Absolutely unheard of for a back that carried the load for his team for so many years.

Walter made it clear early that he would do anything to help the Bears win. Run, block, punt, carry water, anything. He was an amazing running back, but it was always team first.
Just look at how good he became at blocking and receiving.
He was an amazing man who should still be the face of the bears. Tragic loss.
