Some liberties taken in the article (to my knowledge McLaughlin only bought the players' contracts, not the team itself since the Rosebuds and the PCHA folded), but a decently written article.

That would make sense because if he did buy the team wouldn't its history be part of the hawks' history?

Pretty much. Back then the Stanley Cup was a challenge cup between the top-tier hockey leages in Canada, and the PCHA was a direct competitor to the NHL/NHA. If the 'hawks' history was the Rosebuds' history, then the 'hawks could make the claim that they were the first US team to contend for the Stanley Cup.

The Portland connection did survive; it's why the Winterhawks and Blackhawks unis and logos are so similar--the 1st Winterhawks unis were surplus Blackhawks ones donated by the Blackhawks.

Their were 5 logos in the first 38 years.... and only one in the next 47 and beyond... I'd say that's pretty iconic.
