BOURBONNAIS--With Caleb Hanie on the shelf for the time being and Dan LeFevour looking more and more like a longshot to make the team, the Bears are actively shopping for a quarterback.
A league source said that Todd Collins, a 15-year veteran who spent the previous four seasons with the Washington Redskins, could be their target.
The Bears called about Trent Green on Sunday but his agent Jim Steiner told the club Green will remain retired and in the broadcasting business. The team had inquired about Green's interest in the spring, but never formally offered him a contract, according to Steiner.
"They were looking at all of their options," Steiner said of the team's interest in the spring. "We never got that far then. He is going to remain in broadcasting mode. It has nothing to do with the team. He has obligations with NFL Network, radio and the Chiefs. He's working now. Scheduling-wise, it just wasn't possible."
Collins was with the Kansas City Chiefs for eight seasons from 1998 to 2005 and so he's been in a similar system to what offensive coordinator Mike Martz runs. That is why he's considered the leading candidate right now. The Bears want someone with experience, and preferably someone who has a handle on Martz's scheme. Under Dick Vermeil, the Chiefs ran an offense virtually identical to what Martz had in St. Louis.
LeFevour had a rough go in the preseason opener Saturday at San Diego. In fairness, he hasn't been given a lot of time in practice. With more time today, he threw five interceptions working with the second team, and his arm strength has come into question.
"For your first action in the NFL that's a tough situation to be in," coach Lovie Smith said. "A couple passes he would like to have back. I thought we could have helped him a little bit by catching a couple of them but the guy gets a little bit better each day."
