The Chicago Bears have plenty of things to do this off-season, but one thing that cannot be ignored is the re-signing stage
Ryan Pace is a busy man this off-season. Pace had to fire John Fox, hire a new coach, sign free agents, and draft seven players, but the first thing Pace needs to do, one at a time, is re-signing his own players. In this article, we will be looking at 12 Chicago Bears that need to be re-signed this off-season.
Mark Sanchez:
Mark Sanchez is the not biggest name on this list, but he has helped Mitchell Trubisky progress through the season. He is 31 years, so signing him to a long-term contract would not make sense, but giving him a one year contract to be the third quarterback on the roster and continue teaching Trubisky for another year would be in the Bears best interest.
Sherrick McManis:
It feels like Sherrick McManis has been on the Bears forever now, but he has been a solid contributor since he was traded to the Bears in 2012. He’s also a great special teams player, but he is getting up there in age (30). I think giving him 2-year contract would be a fair contract, considering he doesn’t play much defense and has been great on special teams.
Prince Amukamara:
Prince Amukamara has been a great addition to this team. He hasn’t been creating any turnovers, but he’s a sticky cornerback that’s hard to shake. Amukamara is 28 and has been solid this year, but he’s not a long-term answer for this Bears team. He is likely a band-aid until the Bears find a legitimate younger cornerback to replace him. Giving him a two-year contract would make a lot of sense considering as soon as his contract is over he turns 30 and that’s when his production will likely decline.
Dontrelle Inman:
When the Bears first traded for Inman he was on fire to start out, but since then he’s really cooled down, and just had one of his worst game against the Browns. Inman seems to drop passes also, which has really cost this team. So you’re probably wondering: If there are all these negatives, why on Earth would we re-sign him? Giving Inman a one-year “prove-it” deal would give Inman a second chance, and if anything tragic happens in the offseason, then he’s the Bears Plan B, but best case scenario, is another camp body to work with.
Kendall Wright:
Kendall Wright has been the only Bears receiver that’s truly worth keeping next year. He has become Trubisky’s favorite target, and he’s a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Wright is 28 but the Bears should give him a three-year contract to be the fifth receiver next year (hoping the Bears overhaul the wide receiver position this off-season). Next year, Kendall Wright is going to be a nice, cheap option off the bench the Bears can rely on.
Tom Compton:
It seems every off-season the Bears sign all new offensive line depth, and of all the players they sign, there is almost always a gem that’s worth keeping around. This year it’s Tom Compton. He’s very versatile and has played well when his number gets called. Compton is 28, but offensive linemen usually last awhile in the NFL, which means, giving Compton a three-year contract would be nice going forward. Also, it seems like the Bears have a solid group of depth guards in Compton and Eric Kush.
Benny Cunningham:
Benny Cunningham is a do-it-all back for the Bears. Unfortunately, this year he has 3.2 yards per carry, and his kick returns are averaging 21 yards per kick. Next year he has to improve on those numbers, but there are some positives this season. Cunningham has been a great pass-protector on third down (even though Tarik Cohen should be in on third down) and has a pair of solid hands. He is 27, but running backs usually lose their wheels when they hit the age 30, which means the Bears should go no higher than a three-year contract.
John Timu:
John Timu will never be a starter in the NFL, but he is a very solid back up middle linebacker and the Bears are lucky to have him. He is young (25) and is a physical player, who also contributes to special teams. Ryan Pace should sign Timu for cheap as a depth option and keep him on the roster long-term so the Bears should give him a four-year contract.
Christian Jones:
There have been a few Bears who has vastly improved this season. Christian Jones is one of those players. He has better vision and awareness of the football, and it couldn’t come at a better time. The Bears can’t let Jones go in free agency. It would be in the Bears best interest to give him a three-year contract.
Daniel Brown:
Daniel Brown has struggled of late. Like most of the Bears receivers, he’s dropped some easy passes and that has to improve moving forward. He’s not much of a blocker, but Brown is a solid receiving threat off the bench. The Bears don’t need Brown to be a superstar but having Brown off the bench as the Bears number three tight end makes sense, so the Bears should give Brown a four-year contract.
Cameron Meredith:
Cameron Meredith seemed to be bound for a breakout year but unfortunately, he tore his ACL and was out for the year. Despite the injury, Meredith by far is the best receiver on the roster. He is explosive and uses his height to the best of his abilities. The Bears should keep Meredith to a long-term five-year contract.
Kyle Fuller:
One of the players who really broke out this year is Kyle Fuller. He has had a great season so far. Fuller has 59 tackles to go along with 2 interceptions and 22 passes deflected. Sounds great and all, but this is the only great year we have seen from Fuller. As great as he has been this season who knows if he can continue this success next season. Fuller is worth keeping around, but we will see if he can continue this production next year, so Ryan Pace should give Fuller the franchise tag.
