I was reading the Macrophenomenal Basketball Encyclopedia, which is all about the style of the game. And it got me thinking, Ben Gordon deserves some credit for his style, which is very entertaining to watch.
The first style point is obviously his clutch play. Since he has entered the league, he has been among the league leaders in game winning shots, and has been one of the league leaders in clutch scoring throughout his career. He often puts the team on his back just willing them to victory. Two game winners this year, both against the Pistons, and a litany of game tying shots.
The second style point, would be four point plays. This would be comparable how they had the long threes for Gilbert Arenas in the book. Is there a better 4 point player than Gordon? If so, I've never heard of them. He had the four point play against the Clippers to bring it into overtime, and then the four point game winner over the Pistons as he willed the Bulls to victory on Johnny Red Kerr night. Yes, four point plays happen in games, but who else has made the four point play to bring a game into overtime and then another to win a game?
Then the third style point is just his great shooting and scoring streaks. He can just pour in 10 points on you in a matter of posessions. He has made the most three pointers by a player in the first five years of their career. He will be right up there with Ray Allen and Reggie Miller when his career is over in three point field goals.
And then the fourth style point would be his celebrations.
In he past, you just had the blowing off the pistol after making a shot, or holding three fingers in the air as he ran down the court.
Then he tried out some parody. After blocking Antonio Daniels, he did the Mutumbo finger wave.
Then, earlier this season I believe, he pretended to be be carrying massive balls after making a big shot.
He has his celebrations with teammates now. He has done chest bumps in the past, and he does that thing where he jumps in the air and bounces off of his teammate. Then he has his crazy high five dances with Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah.
And he's broken out two great celebrations in this series.
The first was the monocle, bullseye, sniper, whatever you want to call it after hitting that three in game two.
Then today, after making the game tying three, he did the nut check.
You can appreciate his great production and efficiency all you want, but Gordon's style is what makes him such a special player.
