Been looking around this morning...I think I'm going to buy a new laptop today. Saw a Sony Vaio on Walmart.com for around $500...probably not going to dish out the cash for a Mac. Any thoughts?

What do I need to look for when trying to find a computer?
Memory? Hard Drive? Processor?

I don't know what's new and what's good... :(

What are you using it for? Just normal internet shit?

I would just buy the cheapest computer you can find.

If it's for video games and what not then.... I am not the guy to answer that.

For most things, 2 gigs of DDR3 ram is more than enough. The processor should be at least 2.1 Core 2. Hard drive is up to you... I'd shoot for at least 120 GB though. Just my input.

I have to recap the internal power supplies on those compaqs, or the HP equivalent. I'm guessing HP has a long-term contract with their supplier, kinda sucky for people who have issues after the warranty.
They don't use them on their higher end models though. I wish I could remember the SC company that makes those micro capacitors off the top of my head. Its some ex-panasonic low end manufacturer.

Yeah, intel for premades, leave AMDs to DIY builders.

I've had good and bad experiences w/ both AMD & Intel Processors. I can say though, that I've been very happy w/ my quad core AMD desktop. It's been great so far. To the OPs original question though, I would check out refurb deals for the best bang for your buck. I've ordered several refurb laptops from TigerDirect and I swear they arrived brand new.

Take this one for example, $399:

Acer Aspire AS7741Z-4633 LX.R1D02.005 Refurbished Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core P6100 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, 17.3 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Brown at TigerDirect.com

Shit, I just realized that link above is almost exactly the same as one of my laptops. If you order that, you should be very happy w/ it. I do a lot of design and development work and it's practically a desktop replacement. Hard to beat that for $400. If you're concerned about portability though, it's kind of big (full size kb, large display). I like it that way, but portability might be a factor for you.

This is what I went with...only it was on sale for just under $300. Don't plan on putting any music or anything on it...don't want to dl much on it. Did get free Photoshop w/ it, which is sweet. So far, I'm happy w/ it.

Google has some cheap ones coming out soon. Just Google Chrome OS though, not Windows.

Congrats man. Anything would be an improvement over what you had!

I still have that computer...Just going to get a refurb'd/discarded screen and make it a desktop. <3 that thing, have had it forever. Also, won't mind using it for the soul purpose of music/entertainment now, including watching streams of sports games.
