I'd like to welcome you Cubs fans to the land of the elite, and prepare you for potential frustration. My analysis agrees with many in the industry...the Cubs are the best lineup, have every maneuver available to the best manager, have a top 3 GM, a loaded farm, a young power lineup that looks like they are driving a V12 compared even solid to good V8 juiced lineups.
Some of it is unknown projections on huge ceiling players still evolving. The pitching staff may need one trade, but there is plenty of ammo. They may not.
Wise of Epstein to build it this way and wait, holding his cards close until they final master stroke.
Out of desperation though, comes this movement of Cubs fans over zealous expectations I fear for your guys emotions a bit. When you are the butt of jokes for 100 years its easy to get swept up in "its really happening" syndrome before it actually happens.
the best team does not always win, especially in baseball. Injuries, pen problems, starters falling apart, hitters slumping or swings developing holes in young players with contact issues.
On upside alone its easy to get swept up in the wave and give into ecstasy. I view the Cubs as a high risk high ceiling club so deep they raise the floor higher than their potential for imperfections.
They are guaranteed to be in the race this September. They are that good. But lets temper expectations beyond that, baseball is as fickle as they come, paper teams collapse all the time. Young players have disappointing years.
Enjoy the ride by all means, just for the crowd already reveling put some patience on this, and understand the full championship window is open, but its open all the way over the next 3-7 years. For this club one Championship is enough to start with. Just get one. Make some happy centurions. End the curse and the jokes and futility.
Don't get discouraged if it doesn't all go as planned and a statistical abomination reveals itself that needs to be tweaked to function at efficiency and figure it all out over the next 5 years. Just stay strong, stay competitive and get it done once. The Yankees brought 200,000,000 rosters for 20 years and they did win a couple times, but they also proved how difficult baseball and its hot streaks are to control with 12-17 guys needed to get hot at the same time in October.
Best of luck to you. I hope it happens. Calm down and act like you've been here. Its a long season.
