Stealing a qualified GM candidate from KC is the best case scenario if we keep Nagy. KC is the best organization in football right now so there's no slam dunk hire out there he'd be the closest thing.
Nagy's biggest accomplishment looking back might end up being somehow carrying Mitch Trubisky (a homeless man's Alex Smith at this point) to a probowl and twice to the playoffs. Even Belichick didn't make the playoffs without a QB so we should take a step back and think about how much a good coach can do with a bad QB.
I do wonder if the fit between him and Pace was an issue in terms on coming from different teams and what players/positions they value. I know the Saints are a good team but at the QB position they lucked into Brees as a free agent who overcame a bad injury, Teddy Brigdewater, Jamies Winston, and have been absolutely convinced Hill is the next guy.
How well do they actually understand finding one in the draft?
At least you can argue the Chiefs knew what they had in Alex Smith and decided to take a swing at Mahomes.
You could also say this offseason for the Bears is similar to that legendary offseason for the Chiefs. They made the playoffs with Alex Smith but weren't fooled by TD numbers and not picking anywhere near the top of the draft.
That's exactly where the Bears are going to find themselves this offseason. Bears can't be fooled by some decent stats (inflated from week competition) into thinking Trubisky is improving enough to be a franchise QB. They aren't picking at the top of the draft.
I'm absolutely onboard with them bringing somebody in who was at least involved in that decision in KC because there's nothing more important than the Bears not falling for Trubiskiy's numbers, deciding to find a new guy this offseason at QB, and not ever being complacent at QB until you find a legitimate franchise guy.
