First off, I'd like to congratulate Jeremy Morin for getting the call-up, it's well deserved and the Blackhawks should be proud of his development in the American Hockey League this season.
Morin, 21, has been on fire since the Blackhawks started their season on January 19th. Since then, the winger has scored 14 goals and added 15 assists for 28 points in 24 games for the IceHogs. Morin has been Rockford's most consistent goal scoring threat all season long, but he's also shown improvement in his game as of late with ten goals in his last ten games.
I thought the Blackhawks should have called him up weeks ago over Jimmy Hayes, but for the most part, this has everything to do with Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp pending on the injury list. Both are expected to miss Sunday's game vs. the Detroit Red Wings, and Hossa was placed on IR (retroactive to March 19th) to make room for Morin.
It wouldn't be surprising to think that Joel Quenneville isn't exactly ecstatic to play Michael Frolik on the top line alongside Jonathan Toews and rookie Brandon Saad, While Morin is not a right winger (according to his slot allocation in Rockford) he does have a right handed shot and could be an upgrade on that right side over Frolik until Hossa is able to return. On the other hand, perhaps Quenneville is finished with his experiment of Jimmy Hayes lined up on the left wing with Patrick Kane and Dave Bolland, and plans on slotting Morin in his natural position. Remember, Patrick Kane loves playing with a right handed sniper on his left wing, and sees a spike in production when he has that option.
Either way you look at it, I can't imagine Stan Bowman and Joel Quenneville decided to bring up Morin without giving him minutes on the top two lines.
