And for some light reading before the game, check out some of the current unrest unfolding in San Jose. It involves Joe Thornton, who had his captain role taken away in the last offseason.

In a question and answer session with season-ticket holders Thursday in San Jose, General Manager Doug Wilson addressed the decision to strip Thornton of the captaincy in a much more candid way than he has previously. David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News was on hand to cover the event:

Wilson prefaced his remarks by saying he is a huge Thornton fan.

"He cares about the game so much. The reason we took the 'C' off him ... Joe carries the weight of the team on his shoulders, and he's got such a big heart that when stress comes on him, he lashes out at people," Wilson said, "and it kind of impacts them.

"The pressure and stress, I felt, was getting to Joe," the general manager said. "And I sat him down and said we need other players to step up and share this. He got it. He didn't like it, but he got it and he understood it."

When asked about these comments Friday, Thornton had a curt response via Pollak:

"I think Doug just needs to shut his mouth," Thornton said after his team's morning practice. "I think that's the bottom line."

Thornton added: "All I've got to say is I've been here every day working hard. I haven't taken a sabbatical. He just needs to stop lying, shut his mouth."

Yikes.

Can't be a happy locker ro... err I mean dressing room in San Jose. I have always thought J Thornton was not a guy worthy of wearing the C.

Glad to see you called the room in which players get dressed by its appropriate moniker. They don't have lockers, like a gym or a swimming hole, they got stalls.

TCD will be proud of ya! :smug2:

That's just poor planning. ALWAYS check the schedule before making an appointment.

So then it's really a Stallroom. :elephant:

Yep with urinals, terlets and showers.

It's called the Staalroom in Carolina.

Wait, when did Marleau cease to be their captain?

I didn't know that he ever was. Always worn the "A" I believe

He was their captain from 2004-2009, according to the Google. Thornton was traded to the club from Boston in 2005, so I'm guessing Thornton has been the captain since 2010.

Thanks for making me have to do my own homework, DMelt.

Asshole.

Joe Thornton is a dumbass. Never a good idea to tell your boss that he needs to shut his mouth. IF the Sharks don't win the cup this year, I'm willing to bet he's gone after this season.

He's certainly got balls, but as Wilson noted during the season ticket holders meeting, and prior to Thornton's tirade, this is a perfect example of him lashing out, though Doug Wilson also seems like an A-Hole.

My guess is that Thornton has had enough of Wilson, Wilson has had enough of Thornton, so Wilson will have to trade him in the offseason, and may not get as much back because Darren Gregor (sic?) said on NHL tonight, last night (or yesternight, as my 3-year old calls it), that Thornton's K allows him the power to veto being traded to a lot of teams, which, of course limits GM Wilson's options.
