Oscar Pistorius charged with murder, reportedly had firearms at home to allay fears of invasion

South African police have charged Olympic star Oscar Pistorius with the murder of his girlfriend, who was shot in the sprinter's home Thursday.

Pistorius, 26, kept weapons at his gated, luxury South African home as a means of protection against his country's soaring crime rate, according to a British writer who had exclusive access to the Olympic sprinter.

Blade Runner...LOL.

When my wife told me about this guy shooting his girlfriend my first thought was; why didn't he just kick her a time or two? One kick to the head, or two in the chest, would have done the job easy.

Isn't it normal to take your girlfriend out on Valentine's Day?

Funny thing is she snuck into his place at 3 AM to surprise him with a Valentines gift. I guess he doesn't like surprises.

Sneaking into a place in SA is almost a surefire way to get shot. Home burglary is the predominant crime there; they surround their houses with 8+ foot walls, electified fences on top of those walls, and razor wire on occasion. Not to mention the bars on all their windows, personal secerity firms for each neigborhood (since the police are virtually useless), etc. Hell, one filthy rich guy I met when I was there said his home was robbed 5 times in the 8 years he has lived there and twice he was held at gunpoint. Sneaking into someone's house in that country is not a bright life decision.

All that being said, I'm not suggesting that this was an accident or anything (seems as though there was a history of domestic violence between these two).

Side note on how useless the police are there: my buddy and I were playing some CoD and drinking a few beers when he decided he was bored and we required a trip to the strip club. He had recently lost his rear tags for his truck (for some reason they have little rivet guns to attatch your plates rather than something more secure). On our way we got pulled over (clearly having been drinking). The cops pulled him out, talked with him for about 20 minutes, accepted a bribe of what would be about $18 US and sent us on our way...sort of. When they were done they asked us which club we were going to and told us to take our time, they would wait around outside and follow us home to make sure we made it there safely.

yeah, it seemed like an accident at first but as you point out there was the history of domestic violence and apparently someone heard more arguing before the shots. I think I'd have a problem with the accident story though cause he'd have to still see her in order to shoot her several times and even if he couldn't make out that it was her, who'd want to shoot a pretty girl? I would also guess it was common for her to come and go since they were in a relationship.

Exactly. The predominant wisdom of the South Africans I hung around was "if it's a black guy [and not the maid, domestic worker, or gardener] fire at will." I don't think that applies to the hot blonde in this case. I found the social dynamics down there to be simply baffling.

Pffft... I accidentally navigated myself into the Cabrini-Green projects and did that in broad daylight.

In PNG you don't stop for stranded motorists. And if they jump into the road, you run them over. Fortunately I have never had to drive there.

My buddy's car broke down in front of Cabrini-Green on a Friday night. We got out alive but the car didn't.

The girlfriend and I were headed home from the Lincoln Park Zoo and I made a very wrong right turn. It was my first lesson that expressway signs aren't always the safest thing to follow. When people start staring, yelling and pointing you start blowing off red lights. I figured no cop in his right mind was going to write me up. If anything, I would have gotten an escort out of there.

We were headed to the Division street bars. A car of blacks pulled along side of us and offered to give us a jump for 5 bucks. I said I'd give them 5 bucks for a ride to the bars. They agreed and give us the lift. They had some Rum with them and we drank a few shots along the way. My buddy and I partied at Mother's Bar and then found a ride home. We did stop back at the vehicle to retrieve a bottle of Black Velvet. A week later an out of towner strayed too far from his hotel and had his throat slit where we broke down.

Yeah, I haven't been through there since my first experience, but I heard the demolition has completely changed the area.

It's like Wicker Park southeast now, or Lincoln Park south.

Actually, what the **** was I thinking... it has its own name these days. You'll love this:

"SoNo." (South of North Ave)
