Say what you will about what this (and this certainly has more to do with Comey than it does Blago), but this has far more to do with sentencing practices than anything else. Keeping in mind that the judge in the case declared a mistrial on 23 of the 24 counts, that the judge in the case was the same judge who only gave Nick Calabrese (who committed 14 murders) 12 years because he helped in the "Family Secrets" Trial, and that what Blago did was nonviolent, him serving 8 years is fucking insane. Any opponent of the Prison Industrial Complex should first ask themselves about federal sentencing guidelines before they attempt to examine Trump's motivations for this.
Now, because this will certainly need to be added: none of this changes the fact that Blago is an enormous piece of shit.

your take makes a lot of sense to me. Sentencing guidelines are fucking imbalanced, but federal fraud should carry a lot of weight to it, but maybe not tantamount to state charges on murder. That said, yes, I am biased because Trump is doing it, but this isn't how pardons are supposed to work/commutations?

I just think the power the executive has in this is bizarre, and I don't recall ever reading a decent argument for it.
