With us only being a few weeks away from the official puck drop of the 2010-2011 NHL season, it feels great to say “HOCKEY IS BACK“! It’s even better to say “WE ARE THE RETURNING STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS”! Now if only we could all say “LOWER TICKET PRICES!” we would all be in Heaven. Unfortunately, the powers at be won’t let the third saying happen so we will have to settle with the first two, which I guess is alright. But since that night where only one person in the stadium knew that game six was over, a lot has taken place. Below is a recap of the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks Off-season.
We shall meet again…
Once everyone came down from their celebratory stupor (some are still there), the thought on everyone’s mind was who is staying and who will be placing their home up for sale. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to the likes of Andrew Ladd, Adam Burish, Colin Fraser, Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, and Kris Versteeg during the off-season. Ladd, Buff, Sopel and Eager all were sent in the same trade to the Atlanta Thrashers while Versteeg was sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Fraser and Burish were both signed as FA’s by the Oilers and Star respectively.
Welcome to the Jungle…
But with losing pieces of our Stanley Cup puzzle, we brought in new members who hopefully will help contribute to another successful year. John Scott, a giant of a defensemen was signed from the Minnesota Wild while Viktor Stalberg, a Swedish forward, came over in the Kris Versteeg trade. The Hawks also signed Fernando Pisani and Ryan Potulny during the free agency period to add depth to the current roster.
You won’t be receiving a Heritage night anytime soon…
Doug Wilson, current General Manager of the San Jose Choke Artists Sharks and Blackhawk legend, decided to put out an offer sheet for Swedish defensemen Niklas Hjalmarsson, who at the time was a restricted free agent. Knowing that the Hawks were in a tight situation with the salary cap, Wilson forced the Hawks hand in giving the money to Hjalmarsson over goaltender Antti Niemi, who also was a restricted free agent.
We're off to Arbitration…
Hoping to get more money then the Hawks offered, Stanley Cup goaltender Antti Niemi took the Hawks to salary arbitration. With the final outcome given by said arbitartor, Niemi eventually priced himself out of the Hawks payroll and his rights were given up and he became a FA.
Did I mention that there will be a Alexander Karpotsev Heritage night before you ever get one…
Doug Wilson eventually does what everyone knew he would and signs Antti Niemi to a one year contract for less money then the Blackhawks offered.
Mr. Turco, come on down…
With Niemi given the boot, the Hawks bring in veteran goaltender Marty Turco who is no slouch in his own regards. During Turco’s prime he had goal’s against averages of 1.72, 1.90 and 1.98. Still, with him getting closer to the end of his career, the Hawks decide to bring him in on a one year basis so that he can be the starter in net and a mentor to Corey Crawford, the Hawks goalie of the future and 2010-2011 back up goaltender.
Bringing back the “stache”…
After a successful season and being the coach that helped bring the Hawks from okay to the best team in the NHL, Joel Quenneville is given a contract extension and faith from the upper echelon that he is going to be the Hawks coach for the next three seasons.
