<div>http://warrenkinsella.com/2013/04/an-open-letter-to-anonymous-about-rehtaeh-parsons/</div>
<div> </div>
<div><blockquote class="ipsBlockquote">

Dear Anonymous:</p></blockquote></div>
<div> </div>
<div>I have never written to you, the global hacktivist group, before. Like everyone else, I have read about your exploits and, more than once, nodded my head with approval. It’s comforting to see citizens periodically bring certain groups to heel, like child pornographers or the Church of Scientology.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I am writing to you today about something else, however.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>In Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, a girl named Rehtaeh Parsons killed herself last week. She was 17 years old. That’s her, up above.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Her name was Heather spelled backwards. Rehtaeh was a straight-A student, she was much-loved by her family and others. She was a good kid.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>In November 2011, when she was 15 years old – just a child – she was raped by four males in a basement. One of them photographed her being raped, and then circulated it to many others. They thought it was funny.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Rehtaeh was thereafter harassed and abused and bullied by students at her school. The torment got bad enough that Rehtaeh had to move to another town. Months later, she returned, but the bullying and abuse never stopped. She was sent messages calling her a “slut.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>You may ask what happened to the four males who raped her, and who circulated the photograph of Rehtaeh being raped – which, incidentally, meets the definition in Canadian law of child pornography.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Nothing. Nothing happened to them.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>The RCMP, who allegedly investigated, are led in Nova Scotia by Alphonse MacNeil. He calls himself a “consensus builder and has two daughters. I’m sure you could find his email address if you needed to.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>The Nova Scotia government, which agreed with – and energetically defended – the RCMP’s decision to do nothing about the rape or the child pornography, is led by NDP leader Darrell Dexter. Interestingly, he represents Cole Harbour in the provincial legislature. His email isn’t readily available, either, but I know you’ll find that, too.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>His Attorney-General is Ross Landry. Yesterday, Landry refused to reopen the case; by the afternoon, he had seemingly changed his tune. His constituency office email is here. I don’t know what his email is.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>The names of the little bastards who did this, and who are still alive and walk free in Cole Harbour, are unknown to most of us. But, as in the Steubenville, Ohio case, I am certain anyone who is sufficiently motivated can find out who the little bastards are, and name and shame them.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>I’m unclear how to appeal to you, Anonymous. But if there was ever a case that cried out for your attention – and if there were ever men like MacNeil, Dexter and Landry who deserved to be fired, or worse, for their pathetic responses – I don’t know what it is. What happened to Rehtaeh and her family is so horrible, so evil, I am ashamed that it happened in my country.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>In closing, I should note that Rehtaeh’s heart was sent to Toronto yesterday, to be transplanted into another person. I don’t know why I feel a need to mention that to you, but I do.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Maybe because, in some way, it feels like Rehtaeh is still watching now, to see who will do something, and who will do nothing.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Sincerely,</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Warren</div>
<div> </div>

We shall see what happens I guess... Have you read up on this anymore, I'm sure there is more to the story? Not saying that it's not being represented correctly here though.</p>

This has been all over our news outlets in Canada. This case is fucking heartbreaking.</p>

 </p>

Again. Again, again, again.</p>

 </p>

We go over this so many times and still there are young girls, there are women being violated. We talk about it after it's too late. Their stories are statistics.  There is very seldom justice in rape cases. There is very seldom anyone but a victim. Perpetrators are protected, by all manner of societal ills. Institutionalized fraternity, the voices of woman being considered unimportant, fear, neglect, and the fear of losing power. </p>

 </p>

I do want these men to be sentenced, to feel remorse, hopefully to be rehabilitated. Anonymous will make their names known if they chose to follow up on this. </p>

 </p>

But I also want us to find ways to stop this from happening. For men to stop doing this. Because that's who's at fault. There's no way around it. Four men vs. one 15 year old girl is only going to have one outcome. She is going to lose. How do we teach men and boys that this is unacceptable, that they can't merely take what they want, that this kind of behaviour is hurtful and harmful and grotesque. These people are bad humans. They are garbage. But clearly there is something so wrong that they don't understand these things, or they don't care. They don't care what happens to another human being.</p>

 </p>

The bullying is awful too. And bullying someone who was raped is just unconscionable. </p>

 </p>

This all makes me so frustrated. And very, very, very sad. </p>

 </p>

Fucking horrible.</p>

Operation Justice For Rehtaeh ---- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:</p>
<div> </div>
<div>Anonymous engaged #OpJustice4Rataeh this morning in response to the suicide of Rehtaeh Parsons. Justice Minister Ross Landy says that it is important for Nova Scotians to have faith in their justice system. Mr. Landy, justice is in your hands.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Anonymous has confirmed the identities of two of the four alleged rapists. We are currently confirming a third and it is only a matter of time before the fourth is identified as well.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Our demands are simple: We want the N.S. RCMP to take immediate legal action against the individuals in question. We encourage you to act fast. If we were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>We do not approve of vigilante justice as the media claims. That would mean we approve of violent actions against these rapists at the hands of an unruly mob. What we want is justice. And That's your job. So do it.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The names of the rapists will be kept until it is apparent you have no intention of providing justice to Retaeh's family. Please be aware that there are other groups of Anons also attempting to uncover this information and they may not to wish to wait at all. Better act fast. </div>
<div> </div>
<div>Be aware that we will be organizing large demonstrations outside of your headquarters. The rapists will be held accountable for their actions. You will be held accountable for your failure to act.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>That is all</div>

I don't think that is something that can simply be fixed or prevented.  Like you said, they really don't care and you can't teach that.  You don't teach Empathy, you either have it or you don't.</p>

I think all people have empathy, that we are born it. But people need to hone it, like a skill, and people need to think and be reflective.</p>

To an extent this is true, but there is actually a biochemical response that allows for empathy. It largely involves the hormone oxytocin. Some people don't react to this chemical. Some of this is genetic and some of it is due to circumstance. For the most part empathy can be taught or at the very least modified with nurturing, but it's not an absolute.</p>

I just dont understand how someone can be "taught" to feel genuine emotion regarding one thing or another.  I mean I've never tried to not want to rape women, I just have no desire to because the concept makes me feel bad.   To be blatantly honest growing up as a kid, "dont rape women" was never a topic that came up.  I can honestly say no person told me "hey dude dont rape girls".  It never happened.  I didn't need to be "taught" not to do this, I can empathize therefore it isn't even an option.</p>

 </p>

An example is my brother and I who are only 2 and a half years apart, and he is most universally hated by my family for what an assbag he is, he beats women and thats a matter of record, most recently he threw his pregnant girlfriend down a flight of stairs, I would not be surprised to find out he raped any and they just didnt report it, since he preys on women with low self esteem, He steals, robs and does all other sorts of anti -social acts.</p>

 </p>

How is it so possible my mom fucked up that bad on my brother when we are a mere 2.5 years apart? I've NEVER laid a hand on a woman, my only criminal offense has been a speeding ticket.</p>

 </p>

In my opinion Nature vs nurture only goes so far, because I have a great example of it from my own life, some people are just fucked and there is nothing anyone can do about it. To this day my mom tortures herself of thoughts of what she did wrong to make my brother the way he is, which is why after I and many of my family members have written his ass off, she is still whole heartedly accepting of him, because she thinks the way he is, is something she did.</p>

 </p>

2.5 fucking years.   Thats all our difference is, I cannot accept any potential bad parenting for 2.5 years turned my brother into the massive **** up he is today, I refuse to accept that.</p>

Fair points both. And I wasn't trying to say that merely nurturing someone is going to change their biochemical make up and make them a good person. I was just trying to be a little bit less cynical. Obviously some people are just going to be raging psychopaths with no human connectivity. </p>

 </p>

I'm trying to remember the study I was reading but I believe it said 95% of people react to oxytocin. If I find it I'll link to it. Also, somewhat unrelated I really want to read Jon Ronson's The Psychopath Test. </p>

 </p>

It's hard to feel vulnerable as a person, as an entire group of people, half the population and overall its discouraging. I don't think we can just say, "Ok, some people are going to get raped. Oh well, let's give up." We can't. </p>

 </p>

And this is why people continue to study human behaviour. Your brother and yourself are an interesting example of nature vs. nurture, of the ways that things are beyond DNA. Your mom needs to stop torturing herself, but there is also a martyr tendency in mothers and if they think they've failed they get really serious about it. </p>

 </p>

Thanks for taking this discussion seriously. </p>

I think nature vs. nurture has very little to do with it... The evidence is overwhelmingly weighted towards the fact that people are born a certain way, and aside from altering whatever is wrong with them, no amount of "teaching" is going to make a damn bit of difference. People are wired a certain way and that's pretty much it.</p>
