I may be in line for a promotion at work (Patch freelancing not Starbucks), but first I have to write a 400 word essay type thing about how I can better utilize Patch's social media outlets to create more interaction and discussion between readers and us.

I have some ideas already, but what might you guys have in mind? What do you look for first when you check your local news outlets?

The unsual, interesting, and the relevant to me. Never underestimate folk's self-centeredness.

I tend to read 90% of news like someone reviewing a stack of resume's: If something doesnt catch my eye in 15 seconds, it is ignored.

As far as how it the information is displayed: Fast, simple, and user-friendly. If a click is too slow, ignored. If I have to click too much to find what I want? Ignored.

Probably not that helpful, but honest!

If you want your company to be cutting edge and successful, they should invent a way to remove all social media integrations from websites. I'm so tired of share this, tell facebook that, opinion this and that... How about some news with your news, if I want to be social I'll go to a social website. I don't need facebook to invade my news site. I'm getting really tired of all the integration. It's become the focus, not an enhancement. I don't want to go to a website to read an article and already be logged into to facebook, google, have targeted ads, popups suggestion other pages, toolbars for telling me to chat back... unfortunately, I know i'm crazy. It will only get worse.

I'd have to second what the Count says, if it doesn't catch my eye in the first 15-20 seconds, it gets ignored completely. My order of relevancy is sports news, military news, pictures of BOOBS.

Caution them not to commit to a fad? I hate to be narrow minded but Mass is right in that it is getting in the way. Not every person that goes to a website for NEWS wants to blog about it or share the story.

The ability to turn off many pluggins, and then MARKET THAT FEATURE to your readers, will go a lot further than the few new readers you get from a FB friend seeing another FB friend share an article. People still want to feel in control even when they know they are being lead by the nose.

No need to invent something that existed before contemporary social media. They simply need to give the user an option if they want the social media plugins.

Well you know what I mean there is no going back. So it would be like reinventing the wheel. At least there are some minor helpers like plugins to remove the plugins and private mode and stuff like that, I just hate that you have to go out of your way to protect your identity and personal information instead of the other way around. The world should be opt-in not opt-out.

This website gives you the option to log in with facebook or not. Its just other websites take note of your being logged into facebook even if its not a website you log into. whereas this one does not.

Oh I know, and it drives me nuts. Some sites have started forcing you to login through facebook before you can participate in anything on that site. You know why they do that, because it allows them to get around a bunch of privacy stuff in one swoop. If you've ever agreed with the wonderful facebook TOS, than if you log into their website with facebook they can work it to get the same access. Yes I know it's big brother shit but it bothers me.

Boobs. Lots of them.

Honestly, I can't help you. I know extremely little of computers and the interaction therein. However, and this probably won't help in anyway, I will leave you what McAtoms says all the time: make good web. User experience is king, and flow and content drives the user experience.

And boobs.

THIS, one hundred times over.

I'm currerntly researching how social media and training are linking or will be linked - and this is really what I keep coming back to.

Maybe make up a fake Facebook account, really throw them off. Be sure to include many pictures of porn in your profile too.
