Most people that feel that way are suburbanites that moved to the city.

In my experience literally 100% of people that say that, or feel that way, have never lived outside of the city limits. I've never once met someone from the suburbs who got upset by someone saying they live in chicago when they really live in the suburbs. Maybe that's just my experience though

I know it shouldn't bother me but I get the overwhelming urge to slap the shit out of people that say they live in Chicago then when you ask where they name a suburb. No bitch, you don't live in Chicago.

I say that now out here and I grew up in Peoria. People in Portland tune out in general when you mention the Midwest.
