Perhaps Boozer will screw the Cavs one more time? In case you don't remember Boozer was going to be a Restricted Free Agent but the Cavs and him agreed in principle to a deal (basically verbally) and by the end of the year he never signed that deal and left for Utah.
Boozer will be a nice addition to the Bulls but does LeBron have bad feelings towards him after he left Cleveland under those circumstances? Is Boozer along with Rose Noah and Gibson enough to draw LeBron into the fold? There still is no shooter so I can see teams just cluttering the lane against the Bulls. Does this scare LeBron away from the Bulls a little bit?
Take a look at all of the teams involved:
New Jersey Nets - Owner and Jay-Z are the biggest draw along with Brook Lopez, but can LeBron look past a 12 win season last year? Nope, I don't think so even with the promises of off the court possibilities cannot bring the King to the Nets. There is an outside shot of the Russian Mafia showing up at LeBron's door and strong arming him into a decision. . .
LA Clippers - VDN! Other than Vinny they have some nice young players in Blake Griffen, Eric Gordan, and they have that strong willed vet in Baron Davis, but this is still the Clippers, I don't even know if they are considered the 2nd basketball team in LA.
New York Knicks - The Knicks added a very strong piece in Amar'e but that is only on the surface. They do have a nice pair of youngsters in Chandler and Gallinari. They have the ability to possibly move Eddy Curry somewhere and open up some more space for another player, but New York's biggest draw is being in New York (hard for me to say since Chicago blows NY away in every aspect), and their courtship of Carmelo Anthony next season. This team still needs a point guard and with no real prospect on the roster I don't know if they can make a deal to bring one in.
Miami Heat - Right now South Beach is all the buzz, but to bring LeBron in he needs to take less money than anywhere else, and he will take less money and less years than Cleveland can offer. The Wade-Bosh-LeBron thing probably will not happen because of the cash and Miami will have around $12,000 in cap space left over outside of the big 3 and Mario Chalmers (and moving Beasley somewhere). I also do not see LeBron taking less cash to play in Miami since he can stay home or go to NY or Chicago and have better teams.
Chicago Bulls - The Bulls HAVE to lock-up Carlos Boozer by the end of the day today, by doing this (and hopefully for around $12M a season) the Bulls hould have nearly $18 million per season left for LeBron and a shooter. If they can sign Boozer, convenience LeBron to come here they have nearly $2 mill in cap space. They could attempt to then bring in JJ Redick to fill that cap space, but he will probably demand around $4 mill a season to play here. May I introduce crazy NBA offseason rumor #9,887,678,554 to the mix. Sign and trade of Luol Deng or Taj Gibson (probably both) to the Boston Celtics for Ray Allen. This should round out the Bulls salary cap nicely, and should give the Celtics some more flexibility in their cap to add another shooter (possibly JJ Redick, resign Michael Finley, or sign Tracy McGrady although McGrady may still think he demands more money than he actually does). Chicago offers LeBron the knowledge of being able to handle the best basketball player ever, as well as the ability to market him to a Global product, but he could do that nearly anywhere now with the internet, ESPN, 24 Hr news broadcasts, and the global marketability of the game as it is.
Cleveland Cavilers - They will lose Shaq (not a huge disappointment) but will probably lose a couple of other important pieces to keep the King in their court. Mo Williams is a capable PG, but other than LeBron there are no other scoring options, and really no true threat down low either. This is a team that could still beat up the East through 82 games, but LeBron HAS to be thinking about those other 16-28 games that we call the playoffs. His largest draw to come back is it is his hometown and it has got to be extremely hard to leave his hometown team, as well as the only NBA team he has ever known.
So looking through the teams, Miami, Chicago, and Cleveland are still the best options, but as we have seen David Stern tilt things in the favor of certain teams in the past, there could be a play by him to raise the cap a tad more than expected to allow this Miami super team.
We will all know Thursday at 8 Central time, so we can still cross our fingers. . .
