I see a lot of people citing or discussing KC Johnson or Sam Smith articles and just don't get it. I mean they are good for some tidbits here or there but they are far from real journalists. They really break stories or release important details. Personally I find that Wojo from yahoo or other teams reporters provide more important and time sensitive info. From what I see, they are just mouth pieces for the team. KC sits on stories or discusses trades or fa info well in the past, usaully talking among what happened. I have never heard him break from company lines and say the bulls passed on this or that, just that it was never discussed. Sam Smith used to provide some insight back when he was in the trib but now he just seems to be towing the company line and doing fluff pieces. Anyone who says that Pargo is an underrated defender needs to get his eyes checked.

Sam Smith has always been weird. Yet he has been for years a top level journalist...I cite him because he is good, and known nationally as one of the great basketball journalists. To say that they are not real journalists is way over the top. I think KC and Smith are both exceptional. KC disagreed with management over Ben Gordon, and I have never thought of him as a mouthpiece for the team. I believe he can be critical of players, coaches, management, but he is not vitriolic. He is more pragmatic and his strengths lye in his ability to assess the team as presently constructed moreso than his abilities to gather rumors and predict the future.

Sam Smith's abilities as a journalist really shouldn't be questioned. He was a great writer with the Tribune and I still consider him a very good writer now.

I have no problem with Sam Smith's opinion pieces (whether or not I agree with them, he knows how to stir the pot which I like). The problem I have with Sam Smith is when people cite him as actually having some sort of inside knowledge. I don't really think he does most of the time, he just makes up his stuff based on what he thinks people will swallow. He's a journalist, and like a good journalist he knows how to get eyeballs so I don't really begrudge him for it, but the people who accept it as 100% factual annoy me.

I guess we should be thankful for the most part he's stopped making up ridiculous trades that have no hope of working salary wise. Maybe someone told him about ESPN's trade checker.
