Whats your setup?

Mine is aging, probably need to rethink my house soon.
So when I first did the cable cut route, I setup a FTA dish and receiver system. It has served me well and internet streaming fills in gaps nicely. Last year I built a DTV antenna and made a basic AMP. With that, I pickup an honest ~23 local channels over air(scan in 35, but about 6 come in too choppy to watch) . About 8 are worth a damn to me (and TBH, that is more than enough to not notice missing cable TV).
Also use a number of, essentially, Chinese Android TVs/Kodi-compatible devices (kind of sad, still more powerful than newest fire and roku devices, despite being all of them being a few years old). You learn quick that the power of advertising hides the fact that a Roku Ultra or FireTV is *not* anywhere close to being in the top 100 of most powerful devices(even simplicity claims and stability are a bit skewed). If you're happy though, I don't mean to harp(yeah I do, those guys should actually release better hardware already, its freaking 2018 and 4gb RAM devices are compeditively priced with their 1GB devices, very sad)
Also use a local file server, so just pulling media files from that NAS makes things easy. Mind you, as complex as this may sound, this didn't happen over night. It's a configuration that was built over 12 years or so, and if you count the network storage, add another 15 years or so.
Had a 1G shield, gave it to my sister, loved it, but wanted to make things easy on her. Shield is still the most powerful device and least vendor lock-in of the big plug-and-play set-tops, so it allows users to do the most as well. Thinking about going the easy route and just buying a shield again, but waiting on a Tegra X2 shield for the main TV.

Looking at doing an omni directional outdoor antenna, split it in with current system and call it a day since everything works. But with the new FCC standards and DTV repeaters scheduled to go up, been working on simplifying my current setup.

Looking for ideas or to help others who don't know where to start (or just give up and stick to their shitty cable/satellite provider).

Whatcha got? Just a Mohu Leaf? Signal repeaters and full grid configured home with 70+ DTV reception? A *stick* device?

I never truly set up the system I once envisioned. I just have an antenna that's wired to all rooms, and use that to watch OTA. I piggyback off my parents for HBO Go, and otherwise watch whatever is on Netflix or Prime (which isn't much). Don't watch much sports anymore due to cable.

What are you using for your media server? I've been using Plex and am pretty damn happy with it so far.

Plex is also my favorite. Just as often I just open a file manager pointed at the network drives. I like how an interface looks for media browsing, but love the sheer speed and organization of going directly to folders and browsing. Of course, the second requires more manual curation to start off, but IMO, good habits are hard to beat.

If I know 100% what I want, I use the file browser. If I'm just navigating and looking for ideas, Plex or whatever interface on subscription services.

I cut the cord 3 years ago.

Use and HDTV Antenna for all the local channels and gets me most NFL games. I live close enough to Chicago that I normally get the Bears.

Use a Roku for everything else. Split Hulu/Netflix with the In-Laws then I'm an ESPN Insider which grants me access to the ESPN app for MNF games.

I used Sling TV for a brief stint. If you prepaid for 3 months, you got a free Roku and NFL Network then cut that this summer because I didn't use it enough. Any NFL games I don't get and want to watch, I just stream it using Reddit Streams.

So all in:

HDTV Antenna - one time cost of $30
Hulu - $7.99/month
Netflix - Free
ESPN Insider - $40/year.
Internet - $40/month (Wife pays this :smug2: )

Averages out to about $10 a month for me.

I do the file browsing, ace stream, and browser streams. Just using a 30 ft HD cable connected from my comp to the TV. No Roku, or any other media platform.

Works fine for me.

$10 a month and $8 is Hulu? I never could pull the trigger on a hulu sub. How do you like it? Is it a resource hog, like say... if anyone ever used the youtube app on a lower-end Roku.

I will echo Crys' sentiments about the Nvidia Shield.

Awesome product for the price.

I pay for Xfinity and then I have my VLC on my Shield and on my Xbox One in my theater room and then just play all my media locally with VLC from network shares.

I've also been using Youtube on those devices for documentaries and the like.

I mean I could get really technical and break out the cost of my Antenna over 5 years or something if you want lol. You're using to many technical terms for me, Crys. I use Hulu to watch shows and movies. I have no idea if it's a resource hog. It's just my wife and I so it's not like we have kids eating up our bandwidth. I've never had an issue streaming Hulu while she watches something else.

I watch very little TV so don't find the need to really get more complex then my current set up. When you start talking about the stuff below, over my head.

You guys have decent pricing for internet. I'm paying $80 Cdn per month for 150Mbps up, 25 down and no data limit.

I have a digital antenna thing that I basically only use to watch football, but I do get some other decent channels with it with good quality. For the sports stuff I can't get I'll hijack my parent's account and stream it.

I have a basic streaming package with Comcast that I will ax because I never use it and it doesn't really give me any better options for stuff than what I already get. They packaged Starz with it for free, but I don't watch that either sooo...waste of money.

Also have Netflix and Amazon Prime video for most of my shows. Plex for any media files I want to stream.

oh no. LOL. I was just asking if you liked it. Hulu seems like this oddball in the world of streaming. If you like a specific show, you might grab it, but I didn't know if this was a subscription based on some kind of choice, impulse, or maybe you just use it because of very specific shows. I have no idea if its any good, the last time I used hulu, I got what I want out of it within a few weeks and naturally gravitated away. I genuinely have no idea if their library is enough to keep a person happy with the service, or if you still use netflix the most, but then hulu to fill in gaps, etc.

^^^see its more about me knowing very little about Hulu. Not you not being a technosnob.

Lol. Yes I like Hulu. I think their content can rival whatever Netflix comes out with. Maybe not TV shows, but they have a better library of movies, imo.

Neither Hulu, not Netflix are worth the money here. Severely restricted libraries.
